So lets say youre doing a science degree and planning to double major. After you've looked up the requirements for the second year subjects you see one major requires 3 subjects over second year (1 in semester 1, 2 in semester two). The other major requires 2 (one in each semester). So youve got 2 semester 1 subjects and 3 semester 2 subjects. My question is what do you do with the space? Do you fill that up with other second year science subjects, or general electives? does that space have to be filled?

You can complete the relevant senior units of study as well.

fill it up with any second year electives, anything you want to do as along all your cp adds up to at least 24 each semester

Well you can really do what you want with them, considering in mind your whole snr year will be blocked out (each major is 24cp so that'll be the whole 48cp in snr) unless you can fit in some of the snr units having already fulfilled reqs to take them. Otherwise it's really elective space for you to do as you wish.

What are the two majors out of curiosity?

Anatomy and Physiology.
Yeah realised that fills up the whole third year. Anatomy has ANAT2008, ANAT2009 and ANAT2010 but from what ive gathered you can get away wtih just ANAT2008 and ANAT2010 in second year depending on your third your subjects. Physiology has PHSI2005 and PHSI2006 as second year subjects.
So leaves a lot of second year space. When you say you can do what you want with them, does it mean any other science second year subjects or any other science first or second year subjects, or even general electives (taking the assumption that two would be used in first year)

What exact degree are you in? Some have different maxs of jnr credit points that can count and that, some degrees have max 48 while others have up to 60cp of jnr credit points counting to a degree award?

And yeah they can be general electives, as long as you clear that min number of credit points of science units specified in your degree resolutions.

BSc has max 60cp of junior subjects, so you could do two junior electives and one intermediate elective.

I'd recommend WRIT subjects ;)
Ah alright. Is that 60cp of junior science or 60cp junior all up in the degree?
