however, i don't support it being called a 'marriage'. the simple fact is that marriage has been the term that has denoted a bond between a man and a woman for thousands of years. as much as i think religious people are bat shit insane, the word marriage has large religious connotations and a lot of tradition to it.
Marriage as a religious institution is less than 500 years old. It was only with the council of trent in 1547 that marriage became officially tied to the catholic church. Of course there were priests irregularly involved in marriages before then, but priests were involved in everything, marriage had as much religious significance as harvesting your grain, or curing the sick, which priests were also involved in.

Martin luther, icon of the protestant reformation, actually campaigned against church involvement in marriage, calling it a 'wordly thing'. As a result, the English parliament banned church involvement in marriage for a time in the 17th century. The notion of seperation of church and marriage was also influential on the American puritans at the time.

uuughmg, such a pointless thread.

yes, they should be allowed - there are not valid arguments for those who are religious
gays receive far too much attention - IMPORTANT TO REALISE THIS
gays should not be allowed to have children
it should not be called marriage, but rather something else
marriage is religious - however the term has been corrupted by those choosing not to use a priest or church
there are gay protestant pastors (fucking stupid)
most against say they hate gay men but love lesbian porn

there are more important issues

there are more important issues than the occupation of wall street, there are more important issues than whether or not god exists, etc.
I don't see your point.

but like isn't it just being idealist if it's over terminology? shouldn't it be the rights that matter? why the fuck would they care. just keep the religious crazies happy, let the gays have their civil unions, everyone wins

The reason why we (as homosexuals) will not settle for having a "civil union" is because the real problem is the institutionalised homophobic we experience. the amount of gay suicides in the past year is appalling. the government's stance on same-sex marriage is homophobic. it is saying that we are not equal. it's about equality. it's about it being officially stated that love between a man and a woman, between a man and a man and between a woman and a woman is all equal. it is about that. its removal of discrimination from our legal system and it's about finally being seen as equal.

because by having a separate name..it is still suggesting that we are not equal. if it is the same rights then it is the same, yet by having two separate names for the same thing it is suggesting they are the same, but not equal

what do you mean being a girl? I am a girl.

No the fact is a marriage is not simply "a union between a man and a woman" it is a union (a contract if you will) between two people irrespective of gender based upon love and commitment so why the need for two separate names?

But they're different things. If there is a different name for homo marriage and hetero marriage then there should be three names: one for lesbo marriage, one for faggot marriage and one for hetero marriage.

Canada (where same-sex marriage is legal) defines a marriage as "the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others", now what is wrong with a definition like that, and calling it a "marriage"?

Settle down, slut. I was on your side, my meaning was that it's preposterous to call gay marriage something different from hetero even though there are subsects of gay, they should all fall under the same term.

I'd rather be a fag, than insensitive and quite obviously uncomfortable with my own sexuality. the majority of homophobes are repressed homosexuals.

Ok I agree with you there...but again the language. Why is there a need to use offensive language?
