This is an afront to freedom of association. I work hard for my money, I pay taxes to offset those too lazy or too "simple" to do anytihng other than university so now I have to pay for their existence through compulsory student unionship?

They can go out, get a job and use private services or increase the fees for those who so love student unions, and rely on their services. :)

Bahaha. Absolutely disgusting.

Is that sarcasm? I juggle university with working 25+ hours per week and I'm doing fine... it's called time management...

Neither do I. The other poster said this "rudd shoudlnt fuking force anyoen (to pay)". And as you know, in a society sometimes we're forced to pay for things we may not neccessarily use. Suggesting otherwise is begging for anarchy.
I don't question it, its really a matter of where you draw the line on government intervention, although history suggests that line is best drawn sparingly.

Prove it wrong.
Well for starters, in Das Kapital per Marx's labour theory of value (which is by the the way almost identical to the theories of Smith, Ricardo) socialism is the system where each one works according to his abilities, and where income in the economy accrues mainly as wages, rather than profit or rent.

On the other hand communism is the system where everybody gets according to his needs, Marx did not describe this state aside from a utopian vision where workers would work extremely low hours, one would no longer have to work according to his abilities in such a society, indeed less so.

At no point do these two concepts overlap.

Since I assume you're going to be forced to pay for it you might as well be more involved in it right?
Whats the point of involvement if you're one of the 9/10ths of the student population who is not a leftist, or more importantly, does not care, has no time, works etc.

I hope we get a detailed accounting of where the money actually goes if this crap gets imposed on us. I remember last time the clowns used to always cite medical services and subsidized childcare as the chief benefits of student unionism. Leaving aside whether students should be subsidizing other students childcare the proportion spent on medical services and subsidizing childcare was pretty small.

Nah you're right I'm sure the correlation is just a co-incidence, and the voters don't really want who they're voting for to win.

Dickhead.

Then they really shouldn't have alot to complain about.
Yeah, people who don't use the union for anything, go to university to learn and nothing else, don't have anything to complain about.

To benefit the local students with which we sympathise with most. They generally would not otherwise be involved in these university activites, however if their positions were filled with local students, it might very well be. Thereby increasing the influence and interest of these organisations.
What does this even mean? Don't think people should have to subsidise services they don't use for no reason.
.
That's highly irrelevant. I'm pretty sure Rudd doesn't go to university does that mean his opinion is unimportant? Nay.
No, but it does prove you are a p huge failure. What kind of idiot can't get into any university at all these days? A pretty special kind of idiot IMO.

This is a good move.
Communism. A good move for the 0.5% of students who actively participate in the union off the back of students who work hard both inside and outside of university.

If you have to work to support yourself through uni, then you shouldnt be there imo. If you were truly worthy, you'd have a scholarship or two. Sure this means rich kids are advantaged, but they'll likely be advantaged regardless, because their parents could assist their development in childhood, probably remained married etc, so the kid's likely not a basket-case.

If it's a matter of work experience/career building, this can be happily incorporated within the degree program, if youre charming or forceful enough to twist some weedy academic arms, but there's still, you know, summer holidays -like fucking 3mths

So there's no really valid reason to not be involved in uni life, as expressed thru the Union, as funded by the students

Julia Gillard informs me that these payments will be going to the university, not the SRC or other scummy student organisations.

Sorry, I'm not spending 5% of my scholarship on paying the union so coffee can be 50 cents cheaper for everyone.
