Recently, my class did an assessment in Food Technology. I got 9.5 out of 10, and the weighting of this is 15% of our final internal assessment task. I calculated this to be 14.25 out of 15, and someone I know got 9 out of 10, and I calculated this to be 13.5 out of 15. My teacher, howver, said that we both got 14. I obviously put two and two together, and realised that's she's rounded the marks. But is this fair? Is this logical, seeing that I got more than her, shouldn't we both being on 14 not be fair? I always thought that the teachers didn't round until every internal assessment task is done. Can someobody please help me with this? Help would be very very much appreciated.

Tell your teacher that she shouldn't be rounding off now.

throw a large brick at her.

Normally all roundind occurs at the end for example.

10.25
11.25

becomes 21.5

Well, I think round has to be done at some point, like what if you got 89/99 for an assessment that has a weighting of 13%, this would yield a weighted mark of 0.11686868686868686868686868686869... so I think some rounding needs to be done. But I think 1 dp, should be used rather than the nearest whole number.

That is extremely odd.
14.25 is what your mark should be. If you were able to get 9.5/10 in the test then she obviously isn't using integers thus your final result shouldn't be rounded down to the nearest integer.

What a dumbass teacher.

Yeah, if the test is going to be marked with 1dp, then you should have an extra dp in the weighted mark.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm glad to see that you all think it's wrong too. I think I'll wait til the half-yearly reports, and see whether she puts 14 or 14.25 on it. Thanks again.

Don't wait till then...it may be too late.
Ask your head teacher but be really polite about it. It will help because then it would not piss your head teacher off and help maintain a good relation with your current teacher.

A similar thing happened at my school when different teachers marked the same essay in a different manner and this girl asked my head teacher if this was fair and then they had to be remarked and she ended up going really well.

It's worth a try. There has to be discrimination with marks otherwise your could have many people coming 1st.

It's what they do in the actual HSC...If many poeple get a 100/100 they actually get the many papers and analyse it to see whos is the best by looking at finer details.

All the best to you.

Are you sure about this? What's your source? It just doesn't sound right to me.

really unlucky mate i would go straight to the teacher about that, who knows at the end of the year that person might draw with you or beat you by that little margin which could affect your HSC badly

Board of studies lady came to our school to give a lecture...I asked.

Also my family friend got 99 in SOC but came 7th in the state in the 05 HSC.

But come to think of it...I have heard to numerous 1st places.

Perhaps I am wrong...if so i apologise beforehand.

EDIT: Wrote "Bored of studies" instead of "Board of studies". Lol

Nobody ever knows exactly what the Board does behind their closed doors. So you may be correct. And about the Board/Bored, i used to always mix them up, and it really messed up what i was trying to say, so now I always refer to them as "the Board" and "Bored of Studies", this prevents me from getting the two mixed up.

Hmmm... that is true.

Actually come to mention it kinda felt as though she was improvising answers at times.

But i'm pretty certain about the discrimination. Afterall how could someone who got 100/100 come 3rd in Ancient as mentioned above and well as my family friend who came 7th with 99...I'm just not sure how they do the discrimination.

hahaha.. yeah she probably was just making things up at times! but yeah the person who got 100 and came 3rd is proof that they do something.
