Revenue law and tax law are the same thing. I found it a good elective because it applies equally to individuals, businesses and companies - very, very useful if you're heading towards a corporate environment. Ideally you'd do some masters work in the area depending on how keen you were.

I'd also recommend your compulsory commercial law subject, insolvency law, and anything that's based on commercial and consumer contracts.

Only if you liked (or were good at) normal revenue law. It's pretty dry to be honest, albeit useful - I don't think you'd do that well if you hated the area, and in the end, it's marks that'll get you into the big commercial firms.

Does Tax Law involves maths at all? Calculating how much tax is payable, stuff like that? I'm asking because I have absolutely no confidence in my maths skills at all! But it's a part of the core subjects of LLB. Maybe I should have chosen BA major in politics and international relations instead if it does involve maths to any extent.

Tax law is about whether something is taxable not how much tax is payable. In most tax law exams you're given a shopping list of different items: overseas earnings, interest, profits from a trust, fringe benefits etc.

Yes, you'll usually be required to do calculations if it's anything like the subject I did at UOW.

agentprovocator, honestly, the subjects you do probably wont have much weight except for giving you an opportunity during the interview to demonstrate that you have a practical interest in area of specialisation x. The fact is that firms care more about your marks than anything, and that chances are you'll have to learn everything from the ground up in the real world anyway.

I'm all for making a 'law degree' contract, tort, crime and ethics followed by a lengthy apprenticeship-type period of on the job training. The most useful part of my degree was PLT. Don't be fooled into thinking that if you don't know commercial law inside out at the time of interview that you'd be a useless commercial lawyer.

As for Macq - LAW503 Taxation.......

Our first assignment (approx 40% weight I think it was)

Research sociological databases and find data regarding the Howard Era welfare programmes that support Bourdieu's criticism of neoliberalism. Also critically analyse 3 cases that reflects this......2000 words.

Heres Bordieu's criticism: The essence of neoliberalism - Le Monde diplomatique - English edition

Also, our first classes was based on the Social Security Act 1991 and social welfare, that is, how income is used to create a dichotomy within the poor class: the deserving and underserving with regards to the disputed existence of a public right to welfare and role of the government.

Now eere looking at the definition of income under s 8 of the social security act.....
So hows everyone else's taxation elective going?

at UWS tax law is not an elective it is a core.

We have the following assignments

- Class participation (Which involves a group presentation of somesort)
- Notice of Objection
- Application for review
- Final Exam

The readings are pretty full on, if I had more time to read and take it in I think it is an okay subject I just need the time to make notes and understand what I am reading!

We have weekly questions that MUST be answered and I am already way behind in readings and it is only week 2 :(
