Okay, lets see if I understand this correctly.

I buy a car that is already registered. I then transfer registration to my name which osts $25. Registration seems to be based on car weight. If car weight is 1550kg approx, it will cost $446 a year to register.

Is that correct?

Also, since the car is already registered no new safety checks need to be carried out on it when transferring the registration/ownership?

Transfer fee.
Stamp duty (unless exempt).
Additional motor vehicle tax (or national heavy vehicle charges) if you have bought your vehicle from someone receiving an RTA concession (such as a pensioner) and you are not eligible for that concession.
Late transfer surcharge. A surcharge will be applied to customers who fail to transfer the registration within 14 days of the date of acquisition.
+a REVS check.

Next is CTP+Insurance.

Registration only needs to be paid when it is due

if the car you are buying still has a period of time left on the rego, you dont have to renew it until then

you only have to pay transfer fee and stamp duty

when you have to get it registered, depending on how old it is, you may need a safety check (>5yrs old)
and then pay $446 rego + ~$500 greenslip (CTP)
