I am taking a total guess at this, but I assume that if 'a' is a constant term then it should be correct.

Ahuh, why would the answer be any different from the general case with ?

It wouldn't, it's just that I didn't really get a definitive answer for the first one, and so I was hoping to simplify it. That way I could get an answer for the result I wanted, and then extend from there.

This is actually equivalent to the question "does scalar multiplication hold over the complex field?" and the answer is of course yes.
