Say in year 12 you had a mx2 class with only one student. Now, people say that the internal assessments are worth half of your final hsc mark and that the internal is more about ranks than marks. If you are ranked 1/1 how will your internal be calculated?

if youre the only person in your cohort your external mark will be the same as your assessment mark

School assessments won't matter - you just need to satisfactorily complete the course.

It's your performance in the HSC which will determine your HSC mark. Eg. If you get 96 in the HSC exam, your assessment will be 96 and therefore your HSC mark is 96.

So all that matters is your performance on the final exam, yeh?

Yes, essentially. But this doesn't mean you can get 0 for your internals. If you do, you won't be satisfactorily completing the course. You also still need to attend classes, as attendance is part of satisfactorily completing the course.

What happens if you need to do an illness/misadventure appeal?

You assessment mark would normally become your exam mark. What happens if you are the only student in the cohort?

Your assessment mark would be determined from your state rank on MX1 assessment compared to all the other MX2 students.

And if you also couldn't sit the MX1 exam? (within reason)

Even if you did not sit MX1 you would still have a moderated internal assessment provided there were other students in the class.

If you missed both MX1 and MX2, AND you were the only student in both courses, then the b.o.s. would have to work out an internal mark based on other information, such as your state ranking on SC maths or other similar hsc courses like physics.
