Just a few questions:

How long do you have to study?
Do you Really operate on patients or is that optional?
Is there a possible way to finish a course earlier than expected?
Whats the 'lowest' atar needed across all uni's
WTF is umat?

How long do you have to study?
If you decide to do it undergraduate about 5 years and then an internship or if you want to do graduate (eg. medical science and then MBBS) then its about 7 years and then an internship.

Whats the 'lowest' atar needed across all uni's
Undergraduate it varies from uni to uni as they asses your ATAR, UMAT scores and then an interview
If Graduate then your GPA, GAMSAT and interview.

WTF is umat?

The average ATAR for medicine is quite high, in the 99s and don't forget the UMAT and interview play a substantial role.

Naming a few...
USYD - 99.95
UNSW ~ 99.6
UWS ~ applicants have an average of 99, though the ATAR is negligible as the minimum required is 95.XX (can't remember). So, there is no difference in attaining at 96 and a 99.70 . UWS GWS is where its at - 93.55 :)

How long do you have to study?
well u need to study till u grasp all concepts, perfection your exam writing, which means a lot of studying everyday!
Do you Really operate on patients or is that optional?
Most likely u will
Is there a possible way to finish a course earlier than expected?
There are two ways to get into med:
1. The undergraduate way UMAT--> ATAR(HSC)--> INTERVIEW ---> Med Degree ranging from 5-7 years.
2. The Graduate way Degree --> GAMSET--- and Interview in some Uni's.
Whats the 'lowest' atar needed across all uni's
USYD- 99.95
UNSW- 96.00
UWS - 95.40 but if ur living in western suburbs its 93.55
Reference: from UAC guide 2011
WTF is umat?
UMAT = FML test
It stands for The Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test
You need a suitable mark that corresponds to your atar.
Like pretend you got 99 ATAR , you would new a raw mark of 50
but if u got like an ATAR of 96 you would need like bloody raw mark of 77.
And 70 normally is 100 percentile.
But the examples i just told u were from UNSW
not sure about the other uni's

Am I allowed to ask some questions about Med to continue on this thread?

1. What kind of personality should you have? I don't know if I'm cut out for it.
2. Because it's MBBS, is surgery a big part of it? I think I'd be too nervous to do major surgery on anyone! I'd rather just be a GP.

I just don't know whether to try to get into med(I'd hate to get in and then hate it), do a health science course or be a research scientist in genetics or something.

Don't they make you intern in ER for a year or something?
