If i decide to do a general B Commerce degree majoring in finance in the first year, would I be able to transfer into a double degree of B Applied Finance and B Commerce - Actuarial Studies without having to learn all the extra content about finance.

Or would it be better to start off with B Applied Finance then transfer into that double degree.

Now don't quote me on this one, but it may be easier to transfer from the BAppFin to BCom-Asct/BAppFin rather than From BCom to BCom-Asct/BAppFin. I don't think you'd be worried about learning all "extra content about finance". There will be numerous subjects you could undertake to that will count for the the double, so you wouldn't waste time.

I am assuming your asian, in my opinion, unless your very strong-willed, after 1 year of Bcom-appfin , u may have serious reservations about going acturial.

Reconsider your degree choice if you miss the actuarial cut off by a significant amount. I hated when they used to say that when i was doing HSC, buts its true. Unless of course subjects like religion, history, french and shit like that fuks your UAI up :p

I agree and disagree with redrum.

Either way, if you're in a BCom (fin) or BAppFin, you will need a GPA of 3, and i think a credit in a respectable maths subject (so 135/6 or 133/132) (someone please confirm as im too lazy to seach myself)

So again it doesn't really matter where you are to start with because u have to achieve the same prerequisite...

The thing is, if you dont get that in first year, you'll be stuck in a BCom (fin) as opposed to a BAppFin...teh difference is minimal, being namely a third year subject FIN310 taht only BAppFin students can do.

Transfer into a BAppFin requires 12credit points and GPA avg of 2.25.
Transfer into a BComm (Fin) requires 12 cp and GPA of 2.
(Note for a BCom (Actuarial Studies) requires 18cp and GPA of 3 AND various credits in selected math/stat units)
p30 of the handbook: said:
If the double degree combination is available; meet the higher transfer criterion of the two individual degrees; if already in one then the student must meet the criteria for the other.
Supra(or, an academic in the act/finance department) can advise you a little on the units and what you might be better going into, content-wise...

It's easier (in that you don't need as high a GPA) to go straight into BAppFin via UAC/your preferred entry method, and then add the BComm to it after 12 points. Doint it the other way (BComm, THEN adding BAppFin) requires a gpa of 2.25

So, the difference is more or less negligible, if you're doing these sorts of units. ;) See p30 of the 2006 handbook, or http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/PDFs/...h="internal transfer site:handbook.mq.edu.au"

You can do the following without being enrolled in BCom-Acst. Though, they will have other requisites:

ECON110
ECON111
ACST101
STAT171
ACCG105
MATH132
MATH133

This is the first year plan for an actuary. You miss out on ACST151 and ACST211. You can do them in second year. Now I'm pretty sure you'll be held back a year because of this. Probably join the pack and do the Actuarial/App Fin double, aye? ;)

Also make sure you are aware of the exemptions you need for Part I. You need a credit average if I recall correctly.

I dont think that he'll be held back a year because the subject that requires ACST151 as a pre-req is ACST255, which we do in Sem2 2nd Year. So assuming he can transfer into Acst after 1st year he should be rite. As for ACST211, many of the acst students dont do it untill Sem2 2nd Year as STAT272 supposedly greatly helps you out in it.

As for the exemptions for part 1, i believe you need a credit or above in only certain subjects (e.g. ACCG105 and ECON111 in 1st year).

The programs, for the first 3years, for BCom-Acst and BAppfin/BCom-Acst are virtually identical excpet for an ISYS/COMP subject and ECON360 which BAppfin/BCom-Acst students need to do.

Well thats good news...I thought you'd be held back. :)

You are right about that you only need Cr+ in certain subjects. I wasn't exactly clear. :p

Also ADD COMP115 to that list...compulsory unit for actuaries since it is a prerequisite for ACST305 (quantitative methods in asset liability management) in third year. The prerequisites:

ACST200(P) or ACST201(P); STAT272(P); COMP124 or COMP125 or COMP115 or COMP155 or COMP165

Thats wierd, because in the suggested program of studies there is no mention of any COMP units (in appfin/acst double there is a need to do and ISYS/COMP unit) yet it is required as a pre-requiste for a core unit.

I know in the outline it says "any 100 level comp or isys unit." That is in actual fact misleading, because at the end of the day, if you think you're going to last in actuarial till at least third year, you need to satisfy the pre-requisite im telling you about. So you think you have a choice, but you really dont...because as far as I know, the pre-requistes for ACST305 are still as below:

COMP124 or COMP125 or COMP115 or COMP155 or COMP165 unit. So I'm saying make sure you do one of these units in either first or second year...whatever ur outline says (coz 05 intake never did math132, so we did comp in first year)
