FPS should only be played with keyboard AND mouse, period.

Quake came out before the whole WSAD + Mouse control scheme rose to fame. All the people I know played it without a mouse back in the day.

the doom and doom 2 and old quake series is ok for just keyboard because its all on one level and auto aims, but in real fps like quake 3 and things where you have to aim up and down, its impossible to use just the keyboard.

but still, that doesn't explain how you can rocket jump using only the keyboard

It was known to be using Page Up & Page Down to aim up & down respectively.
Another classic "FPS" game is Duke Nukem 3D, here you can still rely on keyboard controls only due to the Auto-Aim built in. I find it ironic that now days most people resented Auto-Aiming to be even invented, they now classify it as AimBOTs and modern games have third-party Anti-Cheating software eg PunkBuster.
