POLICE will today interview key witnesses to the death of Sydney pub evictee David Barbour - 24 hours after a patron claimed the teenager was choked by bouncers.
David Barbour was found lying unconscious just metres from the Castle Hill Tavern's Tav Nightclub about 10.30pm on Saturday – just minutes after being ejected by security staff.
According to a police spokeswoman, detectives said more witnesses had come forward overnight, after another patron, who identified himself as Sam, yesterday claimed on radio that the 19-year-old was allegedly punched in the face and placed in choke-hold after being frog-marched from the venue by two bouncers.
"A number of witnesses have come forward overnight and further statements will be taken today," the spokeswoman said.
The break-through comes after Mr Barbour's mother, Kerrie, questioned why her son was ejected from the hotel.
Mrs Barbour told The Daily Telegraph her son had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that her son was "not a drunken lout".
Yesterday, an alleged witness to the incident claimed he saw Mr Barbour being frog-marched from the venue before one man punched him in the face and another applied a choke hold from behind.
Police were talking to staff of radio station 2UE in a bid to contact the witness, who told the station his name was Sam.
"They marched him outside, they took him around the corner in the dark, round the side," Sam told the radio station.
"One took a bit of a poke at him, either punched him in the nose or, you know, just jabbed him . . . while he was watching the other fellow, the other bloke circled around behind and got him in a choker headlock."
Mr Barbour was found minutes later by tavern staff, who performed CPR until ambulance officers arrived.
Paramedics tried to revive the teenager at the scene but he was declared dead on arrival at The Hills Private Hospital.
Police said Mr Barbour had been asked to leave the tavern because he was standing near the female toilets – but not causing trouble.
He complied but managed to re-enter, at which point he was ejected and there was "some minor altercation".
Police said he had consumed a small number of drinks, including light beers at home.
His mother Kerrie told The Daily Telegraph yesterday that her son had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"He really didn't go out that much," she said.
"He was a very quiet boy. He'd never even been there (Tavern's Tav nightclub) before. He was supposed to be going out with a friend but that didn't happen but he really felt like going out so he went."
Detectives have interviewed two security staff who were "present or nearby" at the time David collapsed. Police also seized CCTV footage from the tavern.
