In the political view question in the user profile, where is socialism?? Surely that's a major political force?

It's Liberal. Extreme left is 'very liberal'. Thus the opposite being conservative, very conservative...

thanks, still find it a bit dodgy since Australia's main conservative party is called the "Liberal" party

Also the political views link shows the whole forum when I click it, rather than just those who share my views, as it would do with other things like locations and the like.

Where's theocracy? Surely that's a major one with Australia soon becoming a Muslim nation and all...

Conservatism
Liberalism
Libertarianism
Anarchism
Socialism
Fascism (essentially includes theocracy)
Communism
Technocracism
Other

I don't. It should be a sliding scale from left to right, and then a "do you believe in God?" check box. Because I could agree with some libertarian ideals but not identify myself as libertarian (such as the recent gun debate in ncap). A sliding scale means you can identify yourslelf on the political spectrum but not assign yourself to a particular ideology.

But the problem is on a sliding scale views which are diametrically opposed such as libertarianism and fascism are both lumped together as far right, technocratism has no real place etc etc

Hrm i'm not sure liberterianism is on the "far right", but i do see what you mean. I just don't like the definitive nature of lumping people in ideological groups.

Alternatively people could post their results from http://www.politicalcompass.org/

I hover around the 'm' in 'Dalai Lama' on here: http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/images/internationalchart.gif
Scratch that, just completed the test again and my result was as follows:
http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/printablegraph.php?ec=-8.00&soc=-6.97

Last time I completed it was two or three years ago, I guess I'm becoming more of a hippy in my old age ;)

Perhaps a text box rather than a drop down list, because this gives the users an option to either write an ideology, a compass bearing, or both.

what's the difference between anarchism and libertarianism? is anarchism all liberal while libertarianism is socially liberal and economically conservative?

Libertarianism supports individual liberty, with staunch support for individual rights and ownership, but is economically capitalistic.

Anarchism promotes a society completely free of authoritative institutions, entirely reliant on voluntary cooperation.

I would have thought liberal would generally refer to liberalism, however if the options were liberalism / conservatism i would say it's more of a left/right thing...

Ah, do I really have to point out that this isn't the thread or the sub-forum for such a debate?

If you'd like to carry on with the debate, feel free to take it to the News, Current Affairs and Politics sub-forum. In particular, the 'where do you stand?' thread would clearly be the best thread within which one may describe or discuss their position on the political spectrum, and for particular ideologies I suggest that you try a search to see if it has already been discussed (and if it hasn't, just create a new thread).

Libertarianism uses the concept of negative liberty in conjunction with the market.
Anarchism claims that oppression comes not only from the government, but the market as well, so essentially seeks to have a classless society without a government.
