hey guys

I was looking through the handbook (since I finally got a copy of it from advising day) and I found something about undergraduate prizes and the list of prizes the uni offers.

So can a number of students who did well in the same unit all get the same prize? Or is it only one individual that can get a prize based on the unit they did well in?

When it says "proficiency" in a unit, does that mean getting the highest/or one of the highest marks in the final exam?

Can someone shed some light on how the system of prizes work and how someone can actually get one.

Thanks :)

Heya, I'm sure there's a thread on this already, but anyway. Basically:

- They're usually not shared, but I've seen a few times where they were. I've been to three prize-givings, and probably about two prizes per semester were shared between two people. The rest were for one person,
- the prize-giving ceremonies were done in division (I've always gone to the Humanities' ones) - I'm not sure about other divisions, or how they're going to do it now that they've got faculties. I wish they awarded them in a decent theatre... The ex-Dean of Humanities had it in a shitty little room,
- they're usually for coming first in a subject, but I've also seen it where it's awarded for a specific assessment or other criteria. Generally if they're labelled 'for proficiency...' it refers to the final mark and who comes top, so in the case that first-place is shared, the prize is shared,
- the prize appears on your transcript,
- you get a certificate and a cheque; the amount depends entirely on how much was donated for it. Usually it's between $50 and $200,
- the prizes listed in the handbook are the only official university prizes. Some conveners (stupidly) award unofficial prizes,
- the allocation of general prizes (eg 'in 100 level history') is generally decided in departmental meetings,
- some aren't awarded every year, including the 'proficiency' ones, for whatever reason.

thanks PwarYuex,

Each division had their own awards. I know in EFS most awards are at least $100, some as high as $1000. Search for "ELS awards" to find a program from the night and it should list all the science based awards.

Er... Like I said, it's based on your final mark (ie your result on eStudent), so however that's calculated for the unit.

I generally think it's not worthwhile to aim for a prize. I didn't get two prizes that I was really after, and all the ones I got were not aims at all.
