1) BoS should make some money to cover server costs
2) They are not allowed to make this money by asking people to voluntarily pay for extra services such as a larger avatar.
3) They should make extensive use of commercial advertisement to avoid selling out to commercialism.
4) People who helped before will be unable to help in future because the new changes that don't impact on them will impact on them in an intangible fashion. I can really see how people with larger avatars will receive preferential treatment. It's so obvious

I've receieved nothing out of it, and I could spend my time instead being a paid tutor, and making quite a lot of money for the time I spend helping others, but I don't.

The forums here have always been a free service - with no discrimination against whose question gets answered, and even with the introduction of Premium Membership they still will be. Sure, some members will be paying for "extra features" but this does not mean that they will be the only members who we will assist and answer questions. There will be no discriminating against members who choose not pay for premium membership by refusing to answer their questions etc.

While I largely agree with you here, I can soon see people posting links to the "Premium content" in reply to answers, with the response to obtain a better answer then pay for it.

That being said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and can choose whether they wish to pay for premium memberships. All of the services available now will still be here for free.

True and the forums are what is going to continue to be the biggest advertiser for the premium content. So the better the answers there, then the more likely people are to obtain premium content.

The use of commercialism to pay for ongoing costs I have no problem with. I have been involved in too many voluntary organisations that then set up a parallel profit making branch and bled the volunteers dry. I have been on both sides of this and that is why I made my original post.

I also see in this thread the exact reason why I normally only read the topics in the forums I provide information in.

1. The date that "The Premium Service" will begin.
2. Paying $20 and already half way through the HSC and wont need the notes in 6 months is to me, a rip off, as I really only need to pay $10 (As we (Year 12) only have 6 months left.
3. Their are other ways to gain money.

1 - when I was sitting my HSC I seemed to use the entirety of the notes closer to the exams for revision. I assume everyone else will do the same. Also, I kept coming back to the forums and the site (and still do), so the April date would still enable me to get maximal value. I don't know anyone who uses others' notes to study during semester (only for the half-yearleys, and finals - and perhaps some assessments).
2 - in another post you stated that you had no problem with the $20 membership and that you think it's completely fair.

As I recall, Google Ad's are not pop-ups.

It's half way through the Year 12 HSC Year, so why should they have to pay the FULL amount when they wont need the note's for the full year, Maybe it should be $10 per 6 months, that will give people more options as to if they say...after 2 months, don't like it, they then wouldn't have blown a full $20.

Don't say $20 isn't a lot of money, to some Students it mean's something.

Don't forget that the $20 isn't just for premium notes. That is only one small part of being a premium member. You will get countless other things such as forum improvements, highly discounted study guides (physical copies from larger publishers), social events, careers information, etc.
