just short stroked and lba modded my hard drive

samsung spinpoint f3 1tb (short stroked down to 100gb) ~ $60

in comparison, western digital velociraptor ~$140 for 150gb model

also, kingston ssdnow 64gb

i could've short stroked it down to 150gb and it still would've destroyed the velociraptor in everything besides access time (nothing can make up for that 10000 rpm lol)

ssd access times are amazing but a short stroked hdd will beat it in raw throughput

but srsly, velociraptors are stupid
tell me what these things mean

Also how can something have -1% CPU usage

hard drive speeds

faster hdd means faster boot up time, faster program loads etc.

-1% cpu usage would be a program bug since hdtune was designed for hdds, not ssds

460 SE should be fine for another year at least but if you do wanna up to 560 get the Ti model, fair bit more performance for not much more cost.

ASUS DRW-24B3ST 24X DVDRW Drive
try to get an NEC chipset optical drive instead if you can

e.g. Sony Opticarc AD-7280 or the older pioneer drives (the newer drives have crap chipsets)

they're the best drives but it doesn't matter too much since you won't be using the optical drive much

Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Golden Sample
radeon hd6950 is faster

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6950-1gb-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti-review/

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB WD10EALX
samsung spinpoint f3 1tb

the fastest consumer hdd currently on the market iirc

many stores don't have it in stock due to high demand but if you can get one then it'll be much better than a caviar blue (even caviar black)

Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/8G 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
make sure it's 1.5V ram

older/cheaper 1.65V ram is not good for sandy bridge, can fry the memory controller (actually intel says 1.65V is the upper limit)

Okay thanks will look into this

Don't really want an ATI GPU due to problems friends have had.
I originally did go with this card with an AMD CPU and mobo but then swapped it out for this. 560 Ti is about 91% as fast as 6950 so it doesn't bother me too much.

Wouldn't it be better to get a SATA III instead of 2 though or does that not really matter though? I had this before I went over it with friends, f3 is only $4 more so it doesn't bother me.

It is 1.5v, i made sure to check

no point getting sata 3 in a hdd

no hdd will even reach the max of sata 2

sata 3 is for ssd where sata 2 is a bottleneck

----

sata 2 supports up to 300 MB/s

my spinpoint f3 (as you can see in my short stroking post) will only do 140 MB/s average sustained read

since a velociraptor is 100 MB/s i'm guessing a caviar blue will do maybe 90 MB/s

even sata 1 will suffice

sata 1 vs sata 3 will yield no performance differences in a mechanical hdd

only ssds take advantage of sata 3

Optiarc was a joint venture between Sony and NEC so all recent sony optiarc drives will have them

pioneer drives up to the DVR 217 have them, 218 and 219 have mediatek

idk just ask on whirlpool, http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1473880

but i wouldn't stress over it since you won't be using the dvd drive much

My laptop is white and has buttons I can press on it and this thing that I can put my hand over to make this thing on the screen move around and it also has a glowing apple on the back of it and a little square thing that shows my face on the screen when I press buttons and stuff
