BANS on hard-core pornography should be extended nationwide to protect white children as well as black, former Nationals leader John Anderson said today.

Mr Anderson, who has been lobbying within Coalition ranks to oppose the influx of pornography in indigenous communities, said X-rated material was damaging children across the nation.

The Howard Government has banned pornography in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory as part of its strategy to combat violence against children. It is also looking at overriding the Northern Territory's liberal censorship laws, which allow for the sale of explicit pornography.

It is also looking at restricting the supply of similar material out of the ACT, which has a large mail-order business.

“As Noel Pearson put it so beautifully, ask the children if they mind a bit of paternalism when they're cowering under the table,” Mr Anderson said.

“You can't restrict that to just Aboriginal children. That plainly happens in non-indigenous communities as well as indigenous communities.”

Mr Anderson said the evidence was overwhelming that there are real and frightening links between porn and sexual violence.

“What you have here is a giant hypocrisy that no one has wanted to tackle.

“The minute it's questioned, the members who have questioned it are immediately targeted by the X-rated video industry lobby groups.”

Mr Anderson said that by banning pornography flowing into NT Aboriginal communities, the Howard Government had effectively conceded there was a link between watching the material and acting in dysfunctional ways.

“I think what comes out of this is we are now conceding that there's a problem with this stuff, and frankly I think that all Governments ought to have a long hard look at it again,” he said.

“And we ought to say that civil libertarian arguments are not enough in the face of too many young Australian children's lives are being deeply scared even permanently and seriously damaged.”

Mr Anderson said that while he is no expert, he had been told by many experts that porn was like drug addiction.

He said NSW Aboriginal communities also wanted the pornography banned, and challenged the Iemma Government to take immediate action.

Well I guess it's no surprise.
It is rather degrading and morally damaging.
The male libido was never meant to deal with the influx of pornogaphy we see these days

BULLSHIT! There is porn everywhere in Australia, but not the appaling levels of child abuse seen in certain abbo communitites in NT.

So both places have porn, but mainstream australia doesnt have the level of problems with alcohol, petrol sniffing, unemployment, violence, lack of basic services, remoteness, lack of healtcare ect ect. Could that perhaps be the cause of these communities' problems and not porn?

In response to sthcross.dude:
I agree. All these social problems were the cause, but pornography is just accentuating an already problematic community.

Banning pornography is stupid. Some white folk are alcoholics (I'd say more drink alcohol than watch porn, and certainly more violence can be linked to alcohol than porn), but I don't hear them saying we should ban alcohol across Australia. And do you honestly think someone who looks at porn should be a criminal?

I mean, really.

I think its because they have a tax on alcohol, cigarettes etc and porn (which is mainly internet based) can't be taxed.

ok i am more of an expert than him [atleast with addiction, no doubt mr anderson is quite the expert when it comes to porn]and i say porn "addiction" and drug addiction are two very very different things. What chemical exactly is responsible for porn addiction? oh wait, there isnt one. With drug addiction its a chemical need, your body needs that drug to feel right. The "craving" with porn "addiction" is simply a natural sex drive, everyone has one.

I like their link between porn and child abuse aswell. Almost as illogical as the link between violence and video games. Why? well because every male looks at porn and a good amount of females too, if there was a link we would be seeing an epidemic of pedophiles.

THIS JUST IN! link found between eating food and being a child molestor! Family first party calls for a ban on food, Fred Niles protest against australian farmers!

Not to mention its a clear violation of our rights, if we want to look at porn we can and fuck the government. BraveNewWorld here we come!

You become addicted to the endorphins (might be something else, dopamine is involved but that's a little broad... I'll try wiki-ing if there's a big contention here) created by masturbating over the porn? Our brains are set up in such a way that they can reward X and punish not doing X. Pretty much anything can potentially produce an addiction...

thats not caused by porn though, thats caused my masturbation. Are we going to ban that aswell? anyways i would contest that if you are not introducing foreign chemicals into your body that it is not an inherently addictive activity.

Watching the porn is what people can come to need after a while... I would contest that your definition of an addiction doesn't represent reality, you're essentially claiming you can't get addicted to TV, games, the internet, sex, etc etc

The chemicals which 'create' addiction are for the most part already in us, all the 'introducing foreign chemicals' does usually is get them to act. Why is it so hard to imagine that activities couldn't cause the body to act (when we know activities can give us the same 'type' of pleasure) but outside drugs could?

what you are saying is that anything you do, any activity or any substance can be addictive. Thats one school of thought, but i dont subscribe to it. I put it to you that anyone who would get "addicted" to such mundane activities has an addictive personality and is just as likely to get addicted to eating, to watching tv, to doing basically anything.

The problem isnt with the activity, its with the person. Because addiction is more of a spectrum than a hard line, its difficult to say where that line is. As someone who intends to be a professional in this field, for now i have chosen to put that line at addictive substances, if a substance is not chemically addictive than i say that doing the activity is more of a habit than an addictive compulsion. Anyways, enough with the lecture on addiction thats outside of the scope of this thread.

Wether you think porn is addictive or not [and i say it would be difficult for you to know, being a female and all] you cant honnestly think that banning it is the right thing? people get "addicted" to eating food, should we ban that too? As free people in a free country we have a right to do things like this, and the government is being intrusive in trying to legislate against it. Its also hard for politicians to oppose this, because porn and masturbation are still seen as a sort of closed doors topic, no politican wants to admit he looks at porn even though all of them do.
