Just wondering, for anyone that has some free time, could you look over my PIP intro and give any tips or pointers?
Youth is being taken by storm and drawn into the virtual world of Neopets!
I have always been interested in the social repercussions that the internet can have on teenagers, so in this research project I have chosen to concentrate on the effect that Neopets has on the social interaction between adolescents. I have therefore decided to focus on one of the most popular websites amongst that particular social group as a way of discovering if the internet can impede their social development.
My hypothesis for this matter is that an excessive use of Neopets can lead to a decrease of face-to-face social interaction with friends (for example, rushing home to play on the website after school instead of spending an extra ten minutes engaging with school mates) and therefore causing an inability for them to properly engage with their peers in a healthy, and productive manner.
I will be employing the use of participant observation, questionnaires, content analysis and personal reflection as a way of proving my hypothesis. I chose these methodologies, because they are applicable to the topic and they offer a diversity in the sources of my information. The advantages of these choices in research methods include a more comprehensive idea to what the website is trying to achieve, a grasp of how these users are affected by their involvement in the site and a range of differing views on Neopets effects on the socialisation of adolescents.
In my study I will explore the interaction between adolescents within the site and in ‘real life’. I will be taking into the account the views and opinions of different socio-cultural groups on how the site affects personal interaction between adolescents and their peers. This consideration of disparate cultural and generational groups will allow me to empathise with differing points of view to my own and therefore procure an objective stance towards my topic and provide a cross-cultural comparison.
Through my research I hope to gain an understanding of how the internet is morphing the social climate within which adolescents today communicate. Throughout this project I will be developing my knowledge with regards to how Neopets is contributing to the ever changing world of communicative technology and how it will affect current and future generations and, as a result, expanding my learning of the relationship between technology and human social development.
