1. Female or Male

2. Do you believe there is a difference between jealousy and envy?

YES or NO

If so, please explain I have no idea what the real difference is but jealousy has a very negative feel, more so than envy

3. How often do you feel envious of others surrounding you – either those you communicate with (i.e. – friends/family) or otherwise (i.e. – celebrities)

Very Often (Daily) Often Occasionally Rarely Never

4. When experiencing envy, from where do you believe it stems?

Family Friends Relationships (boyfriend/girlfriend) Celebrities
Other

Please elaborate on why you believe this group causes envy
I see them the most, and so I see the good in them all the time...but they are my friends, so I tend not to see the bad
5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? (i.e. songs and shows like MTV ‘Cribs’ and ‘Pimp my Ride’ where people show off their material possessions?

Yes or No

Why/Why not?
Never heard of those shows...also I don't feel envy for material possessions, more intangible things
6. Do you think that envy is caused more by material possessions (clothing, houses, cars, etc) or intangible items (i.e. family status, relationships, school marks)?

Material or Intangible

7. Do you believe that envy is influenced by the way society functions (as it is arguably very materialistic and superficial)?

Yes or No

Why/Why not?
I think for some people who are envious of material items, maybe, but it is human nature to think that other people are better off than them (have better lives)
8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way?
Other people's ability to make lots of friends, because I'm quite introverted...

2. Do you believe there is a difference between jealousy and envy?

NO

If so, please explain

I believe that to be jealous of someone you must first envy what he or she have, that you don’t have. Or what they can do that you can’t. You wish you have something you don’t so your jealous and envious.

3. How often do you feel envious of others surrounding you – either those you communicate with (i.e. – friends/family) or otherwise (i.e. – celebrities)

Occasionally

4. When experiencing envy, from where do you believe it stems?

Friends (a bit silly I know)

please elaborate on why you believe this group causes envy

Well I’m the oldest at home and many of my friend have older siblings who take all the reasonability. I guess I wish I didn’t have as many responsibilities. I envy that they have older siblings to teach them new things while I’m trying to be the mature older sister.

5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? (i.e. songs and shows like MTV ‘Cribs’ and ‘Pimp my Ride’ where people show off their material possessions?

Yes

Why/Why not?

I think all the expressions used when describing and talking about certain aspects of the media contribute to the way I feel when watching these things especially shows that you have mentions. It inspires people to want to have more rather then to be more.

6. Do you think that envy is caused more by material possessions (clothing, houses, cars, etc) or intangible items (i.e. family status, relationships, school marks)?

Material

7. Do you believe that envy is influenced by the way society functions (as it is arguably very materialistic and superficial)?

Yes

Why/Why not?

Absolutely the ideal life is portrayed as being wealthy with many expensive possessions. People are almost raised to believe that having more is being more. Some people will judge you based on the things you have rather then the person you are. This is all from propaganda and what people see in the media.

8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way?

I am envious of people who didn’t have to work for what they have. Like being born into a wealthy family. Because everything comes so easy for them where I find I work really hard for everything I have.

1. Male.

2. Do you believe there is a difference between jealousy and envy? Yes. Generally I would say jealousy is accompanied by resentment, whereas that's not necessarily the case with envy (I feel this distinction is important and not really considered by your following questions).

3. How often do you feel envious of others surrounding you? Occasionally.

4. When experiencing envy, from where do you believe it stems? Friends. Probably because it's a more diverse group and closer to my interests/wants than any other.

5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? Yes. Manufactured desires and needs.

6. Do you think that envy is caused more by material possessions (clothing, houses, cars, etc) or intangible items (i.e. family status, relationships, school marks)? Intangible.

7. Do you believe that envy is influenced by the way society functions (as it is arguably very materialistic and superficial)? In a way, yes. It's human nature to want to be in a better position. Whether this better position includes material/superficial items depends on the person, who can be influenced by the media.

8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way? People who manage time successfully, something I need to work on. From this, everything else flows.

2. Do you believe there is a difference between jealousy and envy?

YES or NO

If so, please explain
Envy; a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.

Jealousy;jealous resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage, etc., or against another's success or advantage itself.

From this i think that envy may be like you acknowledge someone is better off than you, or has what you don't and that makes you mad, however jealousy makes you actually want to take it from them?
i dunno, that's a good question, i've never really thought about it.

3. How often do you feel envious of others surrounding you – either those you communicate with (i.e. – friends/family) or otherwise (i.e. – celebrities)

Very Often (Daily) Often Occasionally Rarely Never

4. When experiencing envy, from where do you believe it stems?

Family Friends Relationships (boyfriend/girlfriend) Celebrities
Other

Please elaborate on why you believe this group causes envy
I have a younger sister,
she is very babied, and can complain and get anything,
example; my ipod broke got shipped away for 3 months, and was repaired.
her ipod broke she cried, and the next day she got the latest nano with video, pictures etc. she's 12.

5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? (i.e. songs and shows like MTV ‘Cribs’ and ‘Pimp my Ride’ where people show off their material possessions?

Yes or No

Why/Why not?
I guess depending on what a person values they may see things on cribs, pimp my ride, etc as stuff they want. because esp being in Australia, seeing that, being like well why don't we have that, or that opportunity. I also think shows like The Hills, and Laguna [even thou i love them] make teens jealous that they don't have the big houses, or the "boy drama" so they go looking to cause some. noticed that at school.

Because i feel in modern society, we place too higher value on these materialistic things, and therefore seeing someone better off, or enjoying things you can't afford, places a feeling of failure and causes envy.

8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way?

I think people that have mass amounts of friends, or have lots of people really close to them, but i know they don't deserve it. I feel that i'm a good friend to so many people that take that for granted, and these people who have lots of people, and are really backstabbing them... that makes me envious. i want people to care :p

good vent, good topic, good survey!!

Often
4. When experiencing envy, from where do you believe it stems?
Low self esteem, and wanting something that I don't have that I see in others. Self hate.

Family Friends Relationships (boyfriend/girlfriend) Celebrities

Ok, so who do I envy? I NV talented people who can do something I can't (no matter how hard I try) like rockstars.... even tho I love them and look up to them, I'm still envious because I know I'll never be as good as them. O, and I also envy those who are praised (especially if nobody praises me), like my mother and her friends and family who praise my cousins for turning out the prettiest, smartest, richest, etc.... while I'm sorta ignored and shunned as the dumb ugly dropout.
Please elaborate on why you believe this group causes envy
Family are the worst since your parents (who are very important figures in your life as an adolescent, and beyond even) judge you in comparison to your brothers/sisters, cousins, and their friend's children. In family, you are related and usually have to live together, at least until you move out. OK, so basically families are the worst for envy because you are judged and compared.

Famous people with talent or looks (that you admire) are another big factor of envy because you are not as rich, successful, beautiful, talented, etc. or whatever compared to them. They've got way more money than you which you could be envious for, or other traits that go along with this such as success, glamour, etc.

5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? (i.e. songs and shows like MTV ‘Cribs’ and ‘Pimp my Ride’ where people show off their material possessions?

Yes or No YES!!

Why/Why not?
They are always showing off stuff that is totally out of your reach, and of course viewers are going to get envious. We are just the little, seemingly 'unimportant' people. Here they are with all their cars, their girls, their bling, money, etc. and we don't have anything close to it.
6. Do you think that envy is caused more by material possessions (clothing, houses, cars, etc) or intangible items (i.e. family status, relationships, school marks)?

Material or Intangible intangible, for me anyway

7. Do you believe that envy is influenced by the way society functions (as it is arguably very materialistic and superficial)?

Yes or No
Yes

Why/Why not?
Well, growing up we are undergoing socialisation, learning our culture's values and expectations. Like money. So once we discover the social value of these things, we learn to strive to attain them. Conditions become competitive, and so success is important. If you aren't successful, you're likely to have lowered self esteem. And when you see or know of others who are, you probably can't help but get jealous/envious. Plus the media's bombardment with all the stuff the world has to offer, certainly does make people even more jealous.
8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way?

Talent. I don't have much talent, and because of that I don't get much respect either. Where I come from, if you're good at music then you're one of the cool kids. If you aren't, you're a loser. And the sad thing is, I really wanna be good at a musical instrument (guitar) but I'm awful at it. I see other kids all the time play their guitar and get applause, they are pretty damn good too but I'm so envious because I'll never be as good as they are. Talent is something you can't get IMO, you have to be born with it. Not like money, which is attainable and/or earnable. Which that is why I am most envious of talent.

I really dont get envious of my family since theres nothing to be envious of, my friends have different external influences on their lives so what they have and what i have are seperate things... (der) but most of the time i want something they have. ie. i envy their possesions

5. Do you believe the media influences one to feel envious? (i.e. songs and shows like MTV ‘Cribs’ and ‘Pimp my Ride’ where people show off their material possessions?

i really only get envious of things people make or have made. if its on TV or some other media it becomes comercialised and im not attracted to it. id rather buy my clothes from the local market than a chain store

6. Do you think that envy is caused more by material possessions (clothing, houses, cars, etc) or intangible items (i.e. family status, relationships, school marks)?

Material or Intangible

7. Do you believe that envy is influenced by the way society functions (as it is arguably very materialistic and superficial)?

Why/Why not?

the media constantly bombard us with what is supposedly good and right, i rarely watch tv now since its all sh*t (especially the comercial channels... that said SBS is an exception) if i watch something i watch SBS or ABC since that seems to be the only place for intelligent viewing. The print media also greatly influneces the teenage market with teen magazines which tell you how everything has to be. i dont really get influenced by radio but i dont think many people do. though i dont listen to commercial stations (triple J > all where i live)

8. What is the one thing you are most envious of that others possess and why do you believe you feel this way?

in my friendship group its how beasty your computer is... we all buillt our own and tweaked them to outperform each others... mines more of a subwoofer than a computer. we kinda did this cause we all got into video games while we were younger... the "cool" kids all surfed and we didnt want to be like them so when were were in about year 9-10 we started geting into computer modding to make it "better" and then its like big dick syndrome... his is better than mine... im envious... ima create a beastier machine
