Physics Practical Task (1 Viewer)

Task: It will require you to complete a scientific investigatin either individually or in a small group. You will then individually write a report of your experiment and answer several questions about validity and reliability in experimentation.

What are the best definitions of validity and reliability? I seem to get confused with the both.

And what practicals are there in electrical energy in the home? If I can list all the practicals and get them done in a report, I'll be ahead of others .

Reliability: Is the information from a reputable source, can it be trusted/believed/accepted.
Validity: How was the information gathered.

I think it's that.

validity is whether the experimental method used accurately measures what is tested and if it fits with known theoretical evidence.

reliablity when used in physics and chemistry at HSC level alwys means REPITITION - so u say "the experiment was reliable as we repeated 5 times and recieved values within 1% of each other", or "our expt was not very reliable as we did not repeat it - thus we could have increased reliability by repeating 3 times and taking an average"

prac tips? hmm, here's a few i can think of

spread your time out evenly, if you are given a set period of time, use ALL of the time. double check and triple check your procedures and results, read the instructions carefully. don't panic with "wtf?!?" reactions and good luck

reliability is assiciated with whether or not the experimental process can be repeated several times and yield similar results.

validity has more to do with whether you are measuring what you think you're measuring, ie the accuracy of your results.

Thanks for the definitions all . I'm going to mix up the above definitions with my definition to provide the best definition of each, so others also gain help from it.

Reliability: refers to the repeatibility and accuracy in regards to the conditions present. It simply means 'repetition' of the experiment to increase the reliability of the experiment.

Validity: refers to how accurate your data is in regards to widely accepted scientific fact i.e. if it tests the hypothesis.
