pH = -log10[H30+], where [H30+] is the concentration of H30+ [in moles per litre or mol/L] in the substance or solution. Sorry I didn't explain it, it's one of those dotpoints that you can't really explain without doing all these mathematical proofs, which you don't need to know for the HSC course.

Practical: use pH meter or indicators.
Theory: like Riviet said (Riviet forgot the minus sign in front of the log), but you can also change [H3O+] with [H+] as they both are practically the same thing. The difference is that [H3O+] is a [H+] that dissolves in water.
So, pH = -log10[H+]
Conversely, [H+] = 10-pH
