are there any tricks/hints that you can use to identify if the question requires you to do permutations or combinations?how do you know which one to apply?

Will to tell, i assume you would consider whether order matters or not.

If order matters e.g. choosing a trifecta from 10 horses order matters because if you change the order your are chaging the trifecta

If order matters - you would use permutation

If order does not matter e.g. choosing a soccer team
Then you would use Combinations.
