Exactly. Take me for instance - I love english but hate maths, and i'm pure indian. I just think that this whole "Indians/Lankans/Asians are better at certain subjects" is wrong. It all depends on what interests you, how motivated you are, and how much time you spend studying, not on your background.

I'm class of '04 but what I'm doing (in hope of getting at least 90+) is nutting out the syllabus, figure out what they're gona ask me. I do this for english 2u and 3u and drama, but some other subjects, like history, are a tad difficult.

Just do past papers. Know how to manage your time, and you really consolidate your learning this way. You find our your weaknesses - and better now than in the exam.

But it's basically all about doing your thinking before you set foot in the exam room. You need to brainstorm (if there's no time to write whole essays) essay questions so that if they throw you a similar one, you've already brainstormed it.

Does anyone know about IPT? Does it get scaled up or down? I don't know if I should keep it or not...btw I got 76% for IPT in my prelims

Like any subject, it scales according to the canditates that do that course. Ie, if the person's bottom ranking is 10%, then the course will scale you down. If the bottom is something 60%, it won't necessarily. The subjects that tend to scale 'up' are extension subjects and the sciences, because usually it's a really high quality of canditates that have selected that course.


And also, there's no point in calling someone a 'loser' or whatever else because they choose to study 24/7. Some people just want to do that. I think it can be ridiculous but I guess I'm just jealous because I can't sit on my butt for 12 hours a day and study. Anyway, it's hard work well spent I guess. The UAI will always come back to haunt you.

Some people are prepared to sacrifice their social life for a period of time to get an outstanding mark. It all depends on your values.

So it is possible, all those people who have procrastinated the entire time. I do not recommend trying to follow suit, though.

And what do you do when your not "studying"? Surely you can't study for an hour..bugger off to your mate's place for another hour, go to the city, come back.. study for an hour and leave... every single day. which means half the time you will be sitting at home watching TV and/or eating food which isn't exactly socialising either. eh. except the phone.. but i would hate talking to my friends one-on-one... unless you are female in which case the rules apply the opposite.

well my advice is, not how well you know the subject. its how much you've practiced. You could pay attention to class all here and write notes here and there, but the real thing is about time and practice. Half the questions are the same from year to year. After doing 100 papers, doing the HSC paper will just be the next 101th, and the questions could most likely repeat.
although i've never found out how to study for art, you just have to.. bullshit..

Well my study is basciacally remembering key points... eg for english remember quites and just makes to read and read so that you KNOW the techniques these quotes are employed in.

Don't study forever and rote learn your notes, it will only stress you. KNOWING is much better than replicating.

Make sure to KNOW what you're doing. I can't stress that enough. I pretty much don't study regularly. I read over notes and summarise my notes the day before and the wake up at 3AM, drink coffee, eat weetbix =P and cram! That way you don't fall asleep and lose it all.

to get over 90... work! how else do u think. unless u r lucky and know a subject well anyway. do geo and EES, they're almost the same. i accl. geo, and nailed ees with like 98, with no effort! do subj u enjoy, it makes it easier!

That is so true, do the subjects u like and dont just do them just cause they scale well cause if u battle it may not scale u up as well as u thought

yes, definately don't rely on scaling to get you good marks! that's pretty obvious but you'd be surprised at the amount of people who still do it and comment on the scaling. if you do well enough in any subject you can come out with a good uai at the end of the day. just work at it constantly from day 1 and get into the habit. the better you do at a subject the more you'll enjoy it so don't get behond because then you'll lose it. enjoy your time at school, but don't let yourself regret what could have been (like some of us that have been there)

I find that I type too fast to actually comprehend what it is I'm writing. So, I have to hand write all my notes. And then I have to hand write them again. And again. Until I can recite them. Then I test myself with the mini tests that textbooks sometimes have. And then I go through and do the text book activities, and I try not to look at the text. I don't start all that until a month beforehand, though. Doing your homework tends to help a lot. My average isn't exactly >90 though. I think it's somewhere around 86%.

i have done best at bio and chem and studying for these is not too hard and im sure i have a common study technique though.

-firstly you should listen really well in class which can be hard when it gets really boring. when you study its much more efficient if you arent learning anything new.

-instead of doing useless homework go through all the syllabus dot points and have notes that cover everything in the course. these can be done bit by bit and you just do them the night after you have covered something. therefore theres not much to cover. you should read over this and do a couple of practice responses and this should set it into your mind better. by the exams you should have covered everthing

-In the lead up to the exams you should have covered every dot point in notes. you read over and hightlight things as you read the notes. if you are struggling or dont trust you know something, test your memory and answer some past questions for these topics. since you have prepared little bits at a time you should know most stuff very well so the few days before the exam are good for some practice and to tie up loose ends in your knowledge.

-the rest is up to your exam attitude and how well you answer the questions on the day. if you are relaxed but on te ball theres nothing stopping you getting in the 90s for the assessment (except for a fu*king hard test which is not meant ot have anyone over 90).

i think that to increase ur marks in all the exams throughout year 12 consistency is the key!!! i continually re-read the notes and theories learnt during the day at skool and at the end of each term typed up notes for each subject based on the syllabus. Not only does this ensure the u know every thing that is required for the course, it also shows if the teacher has missed anythin and whether u fully understand all the points. By keepin these notes up to date and re-reading them during the term and before exams, the information is drilled in and does not leave u crammin and strugglin for time to write notes before assessment periods.!!!

I got 92 in Senior Science, all i did was do my work in class and homework as well as work form the syllabus and get the excel guide for Senior Science it covers te course fairly well and just be able to remember your stuff.
I also got 86 in IPT with a teach it had no idea what was going on thus not many people did work like myself but i did the occasional work and all the assignments but didn't finish the project work

i don't really know how i got the marks i did. except in modern history, read all the notes you get, and preferably summarise them, or make your own timeline or something, just to set everything out clearly in your mind. and in 2u maths, basically all you need to do is work moderately ok throughout the year, and then do a shitload of past papers in the week before the HSC exam. i had a book with papers from like 1985-2003. Brilliant. you get so used to the format, you're completely prepared.

and now that i think about it, if it works for you (like it did for me) don't be afraid to do the whole cramming till 4 am thing.

I took a completely different approach to everyone else. Although i put effort into all my assessments and worked consistently during class, i never did homework. Study was usually the night before for all exams, for the HSC exams i study a couple days before each one. Ended up with a band 6 UAI. Also it is important you chose subjects that you are naturally gifted at or can easily get the hang of.

i got 99.1 ..i had a heart attack.
i studied by just reading!! no note taking out of sheer laziness
i did not stress at all during my hsc, i was insanely calm.
overall.. i think i got the wrong uai.. :O
