(b) Why are the inputs for a manufactured product different from the inputs in the provision of a service?

I'm assuming this is 4 marks?

The inputs for a manufactured product differ from the inputs of a service due to the fact that manufacturing requires less labour and is more capital-intensive, therefore a significant amount of intermediate products can be utilised. Additionally, the lack of customisation means that a majority of the products are all produced identical to sell to the consumer. In contrast, services provided are rarely identical and instead need to be customised to suit that customer specifically and therefore utilise different materials and different application (input) of expertise for that specific consumer. Manufactured products provide the consumer with value for purchase after attaining the product whereas services can yield implicit benefits from the application of expertise as mentioned previously.

Why are the processes of human resource management important for business to achieve a competitive advantage?

The processes of human resource management are necessary for the achievement of a business' competitive advantage due to their ability to recruit, maintain and develop valuable employees. The processes of acquisition, development and maintenance allows HR management to focus on employees with the potential to introduce extra skills and expertise into the workplace. Effective acquisition in itself can provide a business with competent employees capable of completing tasks to greater quality or efficiency which provides the business with a competitive advantage over their competition. Development skilfully improves an employees work-rate and motivation, and when employed correctly, can ensure new skills are learned and the employees morale is boosted ultimately affecting their overall effectiveness. Finally, maintenance is significantly important in its ability to maintain employees with the use of extrinsic and intrinsic benefits. Intrinsic provides the employee with the feeling that they are wanted in the workplace, while intrinsic benefits are usually cost-free and gives the employee a feeling of achievement and acknowledgement, which could be deemed more necessary than monetary rewards. Through this, it's clear how the processes of HR can give a business a strengthened competitive advantage over their competitors.

As a result the inputs from manufacturing industries utilise raw materials in which they transform and convert into finished products which can be stored and sold to customers. Inputs for service industries are different from manufacturing industries in that they use finished products from the manufacturing industries to transform their 'product', the customer. Eg. Hairdresser transforming its customers using scissors, shampoo and hair colouring.
