if you have a trig function, e.g. y = sin 3( x + pi/8)

is the phase pi/8 to the left or 3pi/8 to the left? i know this sounds simple but different textbooks/practice papers have different answers

set x + pi/8 = 0.
Hence it is pi/8 to the left.
3 is the period of the graph.
