"
I'm getting 48: 6+-1+-4+1+2+0+10+8+2+6+5+6+8+-1+0"

Just had a quick look at the data, that -1 in your calculation (the second number) shouldn't be there

Okay, this is for the other question you were having trouble with:

Sigma (xi + 2)^2 =

Sigma (xi^2 +4xi +4) =

Sigma (xi^2) + Sigma (4xi) + Sigma (4) =

Sigma (xi^2) + 4 X Sigma (4xi) + Sigma (4) =

65 + 4 (17) + 4 X 15 = 193

thanks sarevok. Will check that out later.

Furthermore, I'm having a bit of trouble with the assignment.

Can we copy stuff from the website with referencing it.
Eg
1) a. What study is the case study based on?

I can't see any answer apart from what's straight in the website:
A study by Blakely, Quiñones, and Jago (1995) published in the journal Personnel Psychology

Furthermore, my biggest problem is whether we have to refference everything that we even don't directly quote from and paraphrase very very heavily.
eg.
Arm strength was measured via a piece of equipment known as the Jackson Evaluation System. It measures the amount of force exerted by a particular muscle group in pounds. The arm strength data would therefore be continuous, as numerical responses as produced from a measuring process.

The answer is obviously taken from the material read from the website. So would I have to put:
(http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~lane/stat_sim/histogram/index.html accessed on 25/03/05).
at the end of it?
Doesn't this mean that every single question will have the website put down?

they are all in .sav format which i can't open with excel (well you can, but you can't read it)

My question is for 1. d. of the assignment it says experiment with different widths. and then print them out. Do they mean in excel or on the histogram demonstration?

How the hell do we print from a java applett.
Furthermore, if we do have to do it in excel, how do we make the histogram column graph display the bars together instead of appart.
How, also do we edit bin width in excel?

For the assignment, question 2)a, is any one actually get the 'message' from Excel? For me it just computes the average, standard deviation etc. with no problems.

Edit: nevermind.

For question 4 of the assignment, are we supposed to use Excel? Because I can't seem to find a means of constructing a box and whisker plot using excel

yeah, about question 1d, i have no idea how the fuck they expect us to print from a java applet...also, q3 f, what does it mean by 'how does australia rate differently'?

edit: ok, never mind about q4, you can use phstat2 which is on the business statistics cd to make a box and whisker plot

Sarevok: i think you have to use phstat to construct a box and whisker plot.
(just realised you figured it out)
I'm not up to that part yet. I'm only up to part 2.

Here's what I have to ask: Q2 f. asks us to "draw histograms". So we manually draw them?

Furthermore, how do we make the histograms bars together, instead of apart as per the default in excel?
