Where did you get this info that there is high demand for bilingual doctors in aus, especially for the japanese community? And then the North Shore area in particular? (Are you just saying that because there happens to be more Japanese living there?)

Also, didn't you say you wanted to become a shrink? You'd better at least do your specialist training in aus, as aus and japan are worlds apart in terms of what is taught. besides.. (in aus)psychiatry is a dying profession..:(

And to Takuya (who criticised Ritsumeikan), it is not that bad, especially for business related fields. It's not like Osaka is the best in Japan or anything either..:)
Well then I wonder why people come from all over Japan to study Medicine at Osaka... ???

Aren't the top three Tokyo, Waseda and Keio Universities? All in the same city!

As for the information given I was told this when I spoke to various doctors regarding my long-term goals. It seems to be quite well known that though bilingual doctors are not uncommon, those who speak certain languages (eg Japanese) are, and thus in demand. I am told by several doctors from that area (as well as RNS Hospital) that Japanese patients are often frustrated by the lack of doctors who speak their language, and that's just GPs. The North Shore area is one point of concentration for the Japanese living in Sydney (as you pointed out) and tends to be indicative of the general state of affairs regarding the Japanese-Australian community.

Now, let's see me say THAT tomorrow! :D
I hope you know that you're not going to be able to come straight back to Australia with a Japanese medical degree and be able to practise as a GP.

I'm also going to study Medicine in Japan, ask me anything you want...

Of course not, you can only do that with degrees from within the Commonwealth. But most people won't study overseas with hopes of returning to practice. ;) Anyway, it's not hard to have a degree recognised from a major trading partner nation, you just need to do that exam and spend a semester at uni to get up to speed on Australian requirements.

that's like saying I wonder why people come from all over the world to study at Ritsumeikan?

It's a poor argument Takuya, people come from all over Japan to study at (nearly) all the universities offering medicine, I thought you would have observed that. And don't think I'm comparing Ritsumeikan and Osaka in any way, they are completely different.

One thing that I never understood about Osaka is how Clinical Psychiatry is listed under Psychology Majors ..I'd prefer to see Osaka push Clinical Psychology (and somewhat phase out Psychiatry) like the other Japanese universities, instead of trying to introduce too much psychological theory into the Psychiatry course and vice versa.

You don't know. Osaka is one of the best medical schools in the whole of Japan, and people don't just go there because of the courses it offers.

edit: Takuya stop quoting whole posts!

How can they list psychiatry as a psychology major when psychiatry is a medical discipline? I can understand listing psychology as a minor in medicine, but asking students of an ARTS degree to study a medical specialist discipline is to me completely illogical.

Sounds stupid to me, yet I've never heard of it as I have no interest in doing psychology.

Why would psychology be studied under arts (in the arts faculty) to start with? If so its further evidence that Osaka is behind the ball in yet another field. Psychology is a SCIENCE (not necessarily a health science, and definitely not a social science) and if it's not classified as a science it might as well be in the commerce or engineering faculty. It should at least be part of the medicine faculty as it is in some Aus (eg Adelaide, Monash Uni) and US universities due to its combination with neurology in neuroscience and psychological medicine, but if psychology is found in the arts faculty..

unfortunately though, in Japan some universities still teach psychodynamic (ie Freudian) theory in psychiatry, so that is perhaps why psychiatry would be studied under a Psychology Major Department, perhaps for the psychodynamic component.

Try here:
http://syasin5.hus.osaka-u.ac.jp/index.html
I couldn't find the exact whereabouts i found the info but even that site i just pasted (towards the bottom) shows it under a Department in Psychology Major.

I've been warning this for many many times before, but let me state this again simply:

If you are to do any of the worthwhile medical courses in Japan and you haven't spent 6 years studying Japanese at University level, forget about studying medical courses in Japan. You will NOT be able to understand the language used in Medicine! Also, the pre-requisite knowledge is science subject such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and another thing science-art (don't know English name), taught at Japanese level. i.e. you will have to study these subjects in Japanese beforehand!!! Do you even know how to say the chemical elements in Japanese? If not, you've a long way to learn!

That's why I have to spend a whole year next year studying these subjects in Japanese. I don't know how to do Chemistry, Physics and Biology in Japanese at a Senior High School level (let alone by Japanese standards). This is a pain in the ass for me, but keep in mind, I am a native speaker of Japanese so it is a little easier for me. For you, it will be VERY hard!!! Some foreigner Universities offer such health-related courses but unless you want to become a mid-wife, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything better offered in English in Japanese Universities...!!!

What are you talking about? Of course I know all the chemical elements etc in Japanese!

Well that's your/your parents fault for you coming to Aus, if you had have stayed in Japan you wouldn't have to waste next year catching up (and good luck too if you can't even handle HSC 2U maths!).
I'm from Kawagoe (next to Tokyo), and I came to Sydney for university.

Yeh I'm a native speaker too, so I don't think its easier for you -it's probably easier for me, cos unlike you I didn't leave high school to come to australia for whatever reason you did.
And I don't want to become a mid-wife, thanks anyway :)

I am tempted to correct the Engrish showing through, but I don't think either would like that.

Takuya's language slips up when he's annoyed though, you can tell if you re-read this page. J-Belle, however, is a lot better composed when it comes to construction of English, though has a few minor problems (probably typos). Still, it's fascinating to read because this is the best English I've seen come from Japanese who aren't academics.

Takuya: Just so you know, it's been recommended that you take that picture out of your signature already. The "joke" has long expired, and the expletives diminish the image of the board. Please ammend. :)

J-belle: Which university are you currently or aiming to enroll in? And which course? Could you tell me why? I'm just wondering why Australian universities are attractive to asian students.

Why the fuck is it easier for you? By the way, what the fuck you doing in Australia?!

And why so favourable about RITSUMEIKAN??? Don't tell me that you are going to study BUSINESS PSYCHOLOGY shit at RITSUMEIKAN. Or are you just another GAISEN girl who likes to go to those foreigner University.

By the way J-Belle is the name of an AV star, nice nickname.

Months ago I would spend almost an hour perfectly English on this forum but I stop because it's pointless. My English is better than that of most of the people who use this forum. They don't even know the difference between its and it's. Now I type as I want and don't give a shit what people say because I'm not going to use this language again any time in the near future.

UNSW -custom degree (i.e. I think only a few in the whole uni are doing it, and it's certainly not publicly offered in any UNSW handbook or information day). I don't want to reveal too much, but it involves Medicine and Psychology ;)
There's SEVERAL reasons, but mainly because Australia is light years ahead of Japan in psychology (even though Tokyo is meant to be equal number 1 in the world -proportionately- with New York, in terms of number of psychologists working!). Mainly though, with asian international students, it's commerce they are interested in when they come to study in Aus..

Takuya, you said it would be easier for you, and I was just pointing out that if anything, it would be easier for me seeing as though I completed my WHOLE high school education in Japan.
And I don't need to justify being in Australia to you! WTF are YOU doing here? :p

Well you must have too much time on your hands if you went to the trouble of creating that signature if it's only about half a question.

I was just trying to say that Ritsumeikan isn't as bad as you make it out to be. No I'm not going to study there. And Business Psychology isn't s__t -just because you seem to know nothing about it doesn't mean it's s__t. Organisational Psychologists are amongst the highest paid professionals in the world, so clearly some people see their benefits. Even in Australia, students still in their Masters degree will be making around $150 per hour, and practicing Org Psychs generally make $350 per hour.

Easier is debatable -depends what field!

wow! what a long post :)

a) Dissect a post is my favourite forum game. :)
b) Enough swearing. It merely diminishes the impact of your statement, and it decays the class of this forum. At the moment we are very clean, and I'd like to keep it that way. Debate is welcome, but not tirade.

1. I got the signature picture off someone else. There's many other people with that signature picture too.
2. If you don't [expletive removed]ing know why I am in Australia then you need to go back and learn some more English girl. Where the [expletive removed] did you learn English so good anyway? Reading your posts seems so nice, "J Girl".
3. What the [expletive removed] is with psychology being flavor of the month? You know what psychology is - it's a course for the idiots who want to do a medical degree for the sake of it but aren't good enough to study medicine.
4. Let me get this right. You are a high school student coming from Japan to study in University in Australia, or high school student coming from Japan to study in University in Japan?

Also while I am at it, I want to stop hearing the words "jap" and "engrish". Why? Because I have words to call foreigners, and describe the way they speak Japanese, but I don't use them here. i.e. learn to type 5 extra characters.

J-Belle your English is so good I didn't understand half the shit. It's just BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH argue for sake of arguing, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH you get into Medicine faculty I don't BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.

What the [expletive removed] is this [expletive removed]: "even though Tokyo is meant to be equal number 1 in the world -proportionately- with New York, in terms of number of psychologists working"

So shut up. I have better things to do than argue with some porn star.

edit: Takuya, don't make me do this again. No more quoting entire posts, and no more swearing.
