Hello people, Nope here.

I thought, since the new syllabus has been released and not many people, even Business Studies teachers, know too much about the quality of textbooks. This is where we as a community help out. If you have time, please fill out this template with the textbook you are using:

Preliminary Business Studies textbooks

HSC Business Studies textbooks

Name of your textbook: HSC Business Studies - Getting Better Results 3rd Edition
Advantages of it: The textbook is clear, concise, and explains most concepts well. Easy to comprehend. Gives various case studies and displays information which may be needed if wanting to strengthen an answer.
Disadvantages of it: For me I found the marketing part of the book a let down and some parts not containing enough information.
Rating out of 10: 8

Name of your textbook: Business Studies in Action 4th Edition
Advantages of it: Explains most of the concepts really well.
Disadvantages of it: Some parts of Operations were a bit unclear and sometimes it has too much information.
Rating out of 10: 9

Name of your textbook: Cambridge HSC Business Studies + Study Toolkit
Advantages of it:
- It has end of chapter questions.
- Instead of giving direct definitions, it sometimes goes around the dot point giving an another perspective to the information.
- The Study Toolkit that comes with the textbook, has some exam tips/advice
Disadvantages of it:
- Some dot points are not explained as clearly and directly as BS in Action.
- In some areas, the book fails to explain the exact meaning and gives indirect information
- The questions seem rather odd, and not exam-like.
Rating out of 10: 7

Name of your textbook: Excel HSC Business studies
Advantages of it:
- Gives overview over the syllabus dot points
- Sample Exam Papers, which seems VITAL due to the recent syllabus change
- A lot of questions
- Topic-sorted exam-style questions.
- A very good book to use as a supplement or catch up on work
Disadvantages of it:
- Some information is rather brief and could be explained better.
Rating out of 10: 8.5

Case Study textbooks

Name of your textbook: Qantas - a business case study 2012 edition
Advantages of it: Basically a whole case study on Qantas, covers all important aspects of the syllabus. Prepares you for Section IV, the extended response part of the test worth 20 marks.
Disadvantages of it: Sometimes a bit unclear
Rating out of 10: 9

School uses Business Studies in Action, and i pretty much agree with the above review. Also, an advantage of it is that it seems to have 'exam-style- questions'.

i also use cambridge and excel at home.

I had a look at Cambridge Checkpoints 2012 HSC Business Studies last week:

Name of your study guide : Cambridge Checkpoints 2012 HSC Business Studies
Advantages of it:
- Provides a brief summary on each HSC topic (approx 4 pages long if i remember correctly)
- Provides past HSC exam papers
- Includes suggested answers, esp useful for Short Answers and Extended Response
Disadvantages of it:
- No questions which target the new topics in the syllabus
- Other books such as Success One have similar content (past exam papers + solutions)

I thought it could have been better written. I wanted it to make sorted out the questions to suit the new syllabus. Unfortunately not

Cambridge HSC Business Studies (2nd Edition)
- Provides summary of each unit of each major topic
- Provides tips of suggested answers

Disadvantage
- Vague at points of time
- Doesn't really cover the concept of the course

Rating - 6

Business Focus HSC
- Covers the course extensively (Human Resource from MO is the best, in fact, this book actually help me get 19/20 for an assessment, which I scored the equal highest)
- Come with a CD, instead of a code
- Provides tips on exams

Disadvantage
- Again, some parts are vague and doesn't cover the concept, but its a lot better than Cambridge
Rating: 8/10

Business Studies in Action
- From my perspective, this is the best current Business Studies textbook, as it covers everything significantly, yet its easy to understand
- Provides tips on exams, such as verbs

Disadvantage
- Sometimes, its contains too much information..., but not vague as the Cambridge
Rating - 9.5/10

Creative Business Studies
- Another excellent book, with commentary by the USYD faculty
- Provides easy to understand, yet significant
Rating - 9 /10

Excel Business Studies (Current Course)
- Great information (best for those times in exam periods)
- Study course summary sheets at the back of the book

Disadvantage
- Again, sometimes its vague and doesn't cover the course
Rating - 7/10

The best book...., Business Studies in Action (4th Edition)

Just an update the HSC Business Studies apps is also good since you can study on the go.

this one?

It's alright. Back when I did the HSC our school recommended this textbook for every student. I didn't get it but from what I could see from people who did buy the textbook it mainly focuses on making you be able to answer short answer questions for various dotpoints so that you have a general understanding of business studies.

I personally found it easier to make notes which is why I did not buy it but if you learn via doing heaps of questions then it would be good, since the questions addressed in the textbook relate to every syllabus dotpoint.
