wasted time on my assignment, i alwys do it and then it always bites me in the ass. youd think i woulda learned by now.
i need to know for example, a photo in a book (modern source) of an ancient ruin, is this a primary source or counted as a secondary???
all help in helping me understand sources appreciated...

if the photo is of what the ancient ruin looks like today, i think it's a secondary source, because it wasn't taken at the time when the ancient ruin was being built, as well as it coming from a text book which are usually considered secondary sources.

No, I'm pretty sure the photo itself is considered a primary source, but any interpretive information regarding the photo is secondary.
EDIT: Depending on what you're studying.
