hahha, a 5th yr uni student asking for HSC students for help!!

Ok, i've never done any business-y subjects before so i'm a little lost.

I've been given a debate topic and struggling to find a starting point.

The debate topic is:
"Managers should think globally and act locally, rather than think locally and act globally"

We are taking the negative side, so the topic is more like:

"Managers should think locally and act globally, rather than think globally and act locally."

If you have any pointers / references you can suggest, please by all means
either reply to this thread or email me: fatmuscle[at]gmail.com

Btw, i'm an IT student and probably won't understand any business talk :p
please try to keep it simple. :)

Many thanks and all the best with your HSC.

Hmm tricky question...

Management has different responsibilities to different stakeholders, in this case the stake holders are:

Internal - Owners/Shareholders,Employees

External - Local Society, Government

Management has to attempt to satisfy all stakeholders - this is sometimes called the "triple bottom" line: financial, social, environmental.

Some points of conflict:

1) Taking advantage of the global labour market will see high returns (profits) to the owners/shareholders of the company... However this will see local jobs reduced (affecting employees) - this is a current issue Qantas is dealing with: sending maitenance jobs to asia.

2)Making use of global tax havens such as Ireland will see the business increase profit for owners, but society will suffer as the government is not getting as much money for their budget...

that probably doesnt make much sense at all and wont help you so sorry! but Im sure someone else will come along and explain it much better...

^I thought you explained yourself quite well.

"Managers should think locally and act globally, rather than think globally and act locally."

I suppose you would argue that managers should keep in mind their responsibilities to the many stakeholders (see above post) while taking full advantage of globalisation blah blah blah. eg. employ locals (fuck outsourcing call centres to india - shit like that) and at the same time take advantage of foreign markets.

I tell you what though, go find some IBUS majors and ask them for some assistance.

That topic is rididiculous.

You need more question paramaters in order to define the topic. Its too broad and general. Think globally and locally? in terms of what? sales? profit? the environment???

Just fart arse on about the trees and child slavery, and the evil corporation.

A bad question deserves a bad answer....

Not if you give the same old leftist bullshit that seems to satisfy so many people. A bit like masturbation I reckon.

When you say in terms of what? Im sure its a consideration of everything with the crux of the matter being responsibilities to stakeholders and the conflicts that can arise...

Managers have the duty to plan and implement strategies, in order to profit.

Having said that, you have the worse end of the debate, in my opinion.

I would start off by placing impetus on thinking locally, rather than on not acting globally. Basically you would look at the importance of analysing the internal environment. To gather knowledge about your strengths and weaknesses. These are the things that will allow you to compete in the market. Only when you take into account these internal (local) aspects, can you capitalise on external opportunities and negate external threats (by external you are referring to the global environment) as your local factors are your parameters to do business with.
Look into "SWOT analysis" in google or a management text. That should explain what I am trying to say.

That's all I have at the moment. Hope this helps.

Except that nothing else is defined. You can think and act globally in many different contexts which is why its a bad question.

For example I could go on to talk about how if a manager thinks globally then they are able to look outside the square and apply it to the local situation. E.g. look at worldwide trends and apply them domestically.

Alternatively it could warrant a totally different approach, as in think locally to how your immediate environment is affected, and then apply that in a global since.

Either way the question is only gonna get some soppy tale about the tress and child labour in africa.

What is this anyway?

Sounds like one of those "debating" topics that they make unnecessarily difficult just to induce desperate and weak arguements.
