I have an essay question that asks "Discuss how narrative techniques are used to shape meaning". I was wondering what are some common techniques composers use to convey their messages?

Thanks in advance =]

:headbang: Narrative techniques
Protagonist: Central character.
Symbolism?
Colloquialism/language type/ formal/informal.
Method of Narration i.e. First. second or third.
Dialogue: What is said?
Structure: orientation - rising action - climax - falling action - resolution?
Thematic concerns - how are they expressed?
Realism
Setting
Tone/ STYLE : E.G. conversational, cynical etc.

:hammer: ALWAYS USE TECHNQIUES and quotes
e.g. for example
In the extract from Chapter 1 of The Catcher in the Rye the author; J.D Salinger has conveyed the cyancial and pessimistic tone of the protagonist; Holden Caulfied by the use of First Person.
"they are touchy as hell"
The use of first person in this example conveys his sense of cyancial disconnection from his parents. This simile is also an indicator that the protagonist may be exaggerating his view upon society due to is alienation.
