For question 6...I always thought evaporation was a process. Am I wrong? Of the four answers...I looked for adaptations. Large leaves are an adaptation and Increased production of seeds are an adaptation. Of these two the large leaves were the only answer to do with temperature regulation. Although this is not an adaptation for cooling...but for gaining heat...It is a better answer than D. I was told that opening stomates to lose heat by evaporation was an adaptation...and I agree...but it says nothing about opening stomates does it. If it said "Opening stomates to lose heat"...sure...because thats an adaptation. But I remain adamant that evaporation is NOT an adaptation...but a process. ( a ) is the only adaptation which relates to temperature. That all being said...I dont see how big leaves for cooling can be completely be disregarded as an answer. Big leaves = more stomates = more evaporation = loss of heat = cooling. Whats wrong with that logic...anyone?

agree

yea i put A as well,

as a large leave surface allows for heat to leave the plant easier hence reducing temperature.

evaporation of water from stomates is a process and a response that occurs..

my teacher said it was D tho?

i also said A, i originally had D but changed as i thought that it was not an adaptation.

Iv got full marks for multi choice resting on this

Hmmm my teacher said D aswell. But after 13 years of education...I have realised teachers say many things (a little slow...eh). This same teacher told me that they would never ask for the prac on the extraction of DNA in Biotech. Thankfully...I didnt listen to her.

i wasn't so sure it was D either..but i figured A was a trick because a leaves are large to get more sunlight..small leaves are for cooling..so i said D

~*HSC 4 life*~ : 8 is A. 10 is D...enzyme is not changed in the process. I almost fell for that aswell. An I also have 15...provided 6 is A. Everybody I talked to wrote D for 6. Including top 5 in the year. I will either been cheerin' or feel like a fool. But still quietly confident that the correct answer is A.

i think for Q6 it is D, cos even though evaporation is a process, doesn't mean it can't be an adaptation.

i just thought that most large leaves are found in the rainforest and not in like hte desert and shit. so how could it be used for cooling when they are found in cool climates and not in hot ones?

Yes it is a process. Plants adapt to take advantage of this process...I agree. But the question asks for an adaptation. Tell me where in "Evaporation of water from stomates" is there mention of an adaptation. Yes...stomates are an adaptation...but evaporation is not.

Which of these adaptations assists temperature regulation in humans?

A. Sweating
B. Water particles absorbing energy from the body and being converted into gas

Can you see the difference?

it is D because large leaf surface is found only in plants tat are in cold conditions so wider surface area= more sun rays... well i guess it kinda can b both...oh great now im confused

hey i put (A) for 6 , at the time i was confident but now u people are confusing me

anyway for q 10 i put (B) but i now think its (D) cause the enzyme remains unchanged right? any thoughts?

water evaporation probably refers to the rate of evaporation, australian plants' leaves have sunken stomates, therefore less water loss... a big leaved tree absorbs more sun ligh = gain more heat... look at gum tree, their leaves are all long and thin... so i go for D

I was confident in the exam...and remain confident of 6A. 10 is D because of what you said.

D is the only thing that would work in my opinion. the large leaves do not cool. movement of glucose to the root requires energy so might cuse the plant to heat up i suppose but i didnt think of that in the exam.
i think D is the answer though as it is still an adaptation (mac guide say: an adaptation is a characteristic that increases the chances of survival and reproduction of an organism)
evaporation from stomates is therefore an adaptation

What loses water to the sun quicker...A towel which is laid out or a towel which is crumpled up. Obviously the towel which is laid out. So...highers SA/V ratio = more water loss = more heat loss = cooling...as i think i said before. THAT is how large leaves work for cooling. Do not ignore this fact. Yes...it will absorb heat from the sun. But the large leaves undoubtedly lose more heat than small leaves...or spikes in the case of a cactus. Still dont understand...heres another way. How do plants lose heat? (evaporation of water from the stomates...Answer D). More importantly...What adaptation allows the plant to lose heat from the stomates? (The fact that the stomates exist). No leaves = no stomates = no heat loss...so leaves are a top adaptation for heat loss. More leaves = more heat loss...please can someone end this...I need o study for RE.
