MQ or UWS (1 Viewer)

I'm in year 12, graduating next year (I'm doing pathways because I'm younger) and was wondering whether (if my UAI is high enough) I should forgoe the fact that UWS is closer to go to Macquarie University. My careers adviser said that, but I was hoping to get some advice from people that are/have going/gone there.

I'm going to get flamed, but maqu is older than uws and as a result has had longer to build a reputation within the industry. That said good marks can overcome all.

Exactly as wheredanton said: each uni is going to offer 'different' experiences, but, in the end, you are either a good student, or a poor student. An employer is more likely to take a law student from Western with HD's, than someone from Sydney with P's. Its like this in every division.

That said, I go to Mac, and love it. I find they have quite a high standard of teachers, a great law library (apparently its better than the city uni's, according to some students), and have an awesome social scene (always important!).

In the end, you have to be happy with the choice you make, because that will determine whether you do well or not. Also, dont rule out the possibility of transferring uni's once you're in. You'd get credit for the unit's you did as well, so you wont lose any time.

It's just my career's advisor mentioned UWS has had some problems with law on some of their campuses or something like that.

I didnt think maqu law's library was super. Kinda small, it smelt funny too. But then again I thought the whole of maqu library smells funny. Must be the detergent they use.

In any case if you want to judge visit the law schools yourself! But don't forget unsw and our fishbowl like *brand spanking new the paint is still wet* law building!

I do know that usyd law library is excellent for an endless supply for prescribed textbooks ready for loan, something that unsw law library needs to work on. Regardless unsw law library once was the largest in Australia. They don't seem to boast about that anymore?

What are u combining B Laws with? Arts? Commerce?

In terms of choice, Macq does offer greater choice in units and timetabling (I have seen and used UWS system and choice is very limited). I do know that UWS lecturers do move around between campuses and their assisstance can be limited.

What do want from the uni environment or uni atmosphere? I dont know about other UWS campuses but Parra. Campus lacks the atmosphere alot of other uni's have. DO u want a classroom sized lectures with 80 people in it and have tutorials in a portable classroom? or want to have it in a 350 seat lecture hall with a massive pojection powerpoint/slides lectures? Do u want access to recorded lectures available online and via free wireless internet?

like what MJ said, choosing Macq or UWS doesnt guarentee future success, u gotta make it happen, and when u do work hard and gain great marks, which uni provides better options for u to capitalise upon.

Yeah, it's just Macquarie is at epping right? That's a fair bit harder to get to than Parramatta. I'm in Blacktown. Also, I was accelerated,so I'll be 14 when I graduate, so I won't exactly be able to drive and I have a younger brother in school still (he's accelerated too).

But I'd really like to go to Macquarie, so I guess I'll find a way.

wow 14. Thats so young. Ever considered slowing down? Taking time off? 15 is a very young age to be starting university. Especially when everyone around you is 18 or so.

Personally I think 15 or so is too young to be at uni. Unless you actually have the maturity and life experience of the average 18 tear old - not that the average sheltered 18 year old first year is very mature.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard? Your last sentence pretty much sums it up, there are quite a lot of fresh out of high school kiddies that I've seen go through the MQ mentor program who are totally clueless, sheltered and severely 'fucked' in terms of their world view. And yes the majority of them went to rich, snobby schools.

There are quite a number of people who catch I think its the 630, but there is a direct service which stops in Macquarie and goes to Blacktown, if thats an issue. It ISNT as far as you would think, and once the train station is up and running it'll be even less of an issue

Thanks, transport was the major issue between unis.

As for being too young, well sometimes I've thought of slowing down, but I've dismissed the idea.

Whether or not I can cope with Uni I'll find out in a few years, but I'd really like you use my time efficiently, get a few years headstart or something, not just bum around at home.

In a field as competitive as law, if I want to succeed and (hopefully) make a name for myself, I'm going to need all the time I can get.

My parents are (I like to think) intelligent people. Even though my dad is a carpenter that works for a building company as a manager and my mum just stays at home and looks after my brother and I (who is 11 and in year 9), I tend to think they are very intelligent people.

I've heard intelligence has something to do with stimulating learning at a young age, but I don't really know much about that theory.

Really, I haven't really taken a side in the nature/nurture debate, and I don't intend to. As a christian, I believe I was given my gift for a reason, although I don't know what that is yet =P.

I hope I've given my vague opinion on the debate and I hope it helped, or at least made sense.

Furthermore, if people aren't as disillusioned with certain facets of their life and use it to drive them, what right do you have to purport that such things in any way inferior or a problem? You reek of a stiff upper lip attitude.

Every uni has its strengths and weaknesses and no one unless they have been to them all no one can tell you which is better than the other, it also depends on what you consider the best, whether you want prestige, a specific program, facilities etc...

I am currently at UWS and I love studying law, I get frusterated with the lack of funding and some of UWS' weak aspects but it is also great for many reasons, it easily made the cutoff (which I was worried I wouldn't do and wanted to study law at almost any cost) and was the only one to offer the social science specialisation I wanted to study.

I am not going to try and sell you on UWS and to be perfectly honest I am still not sure if I will transfer out or not but I will tell you the things I think will help you decide.

Distance/ Transport - UWS is great to get to if you drive, I live in strathfield and it takes me 15-20 mins to Bankstown and Parra campuses. Parking for the year unlimited on any campus is $50. You can still do public transport but most campuses are not close to the station which can make it a hassle, so you often need a bus that goes there of v close or catch a bus from the nearest station.

Multiple campuses - if you are doing arts/comm/soc sci law you need to go to more than one campus, arts etc is offered on Bankstown/Penrith and law on Campbelltown and Parra so some days you will have to go between the two.

Majors, subjects etc.. every uni does the same core law subjects but as for electives and majors in your non law degree they differ, check out the site to see if they offer what you want...I wanted a soc sci degree with a criminology major which you can only do in a combined law program at UWS.

Does it have the facilities and things you want out of uni?

Asylum's right in terms of transport.
Both the 630 and 611 go from Blacktown Station to Macquarie University. 611 is direct route along M2 while 630 does a bit of detouring (good if you just miss the 611). Transport shouldn't be an issue at all with macquarie from blacktown, though i can see how you would think it would be.
