Hi,

What in your opinion is the best business degree to do for an undergraduate? I was wanting to go to Usyd, but they only offer commerce and economics i think. Ive heard of the B Bus, but is this degree more respected in the business world than say a commerce or economics degree?

From my experiences, the BEc is more traditional, and less uni's are offering it now. In Vic, only monash still has it I think. I think BEc now requires an Economics major, so if you don't want to do that stuff, avoid it.

The BCom is the new standard in Commonwealth Countries, and all the top unis have it. Many associate the BBus with second tier degrees/unis. I've also heard the BBus appears to be more vocational and tafe-y to employers, even though I think it is untrue.

But they are all roughly the same. I don't think employers discriminate between them. They do care what uni you're from, and they would care if you had BCom(Hons) or BEc(Hons) or (if it exists) BBus(Hons), and also what marks you get.

Most of the big unis in sydney offer BEco and BCom. I think only a few (UTS?) offer BBus but from what I've heard its just another name for BCom.

From what I can see, a BEco is more restrictive because you must do a economics major (hence the name I guess). A BCom would allow more freedom simply because if you wanted, you could do a double degree, BCom/BEco.

As for which university is better, its pretty much fairly similar. Alot of people will have different opinions regarding different factors such as the amount of vocational experience you get, the structure of the different programs at different uni's, etc. Personally, I think that if you take a degree at any of the major unis in sydney (unsw, usyd, mac, uts), your actual marks will be much more important.

Of course, if you want to do specific majors such as actuarial studies, your choice of universities becomes much more limited.

Then again, im just a lowly first year so I wouldn't know that much :p

not wishing to start stuff, but as a victorian, what is the more prestigious uni out of UNSW and USYD? I can gather that UWS and UNE are denigrated for reasons I don't understand.

I originally thought USYD was the top NSW uni before coming here, but from all impressions, UNSW seems the Uni with a more "complete" commerce program

I mean, I don't want to start flame wars but it shouldnt be that difficult a question. Like in victoria, its accepted that melb>monash in terms of image and reputation. of course there is no implication about it flowing through to quality of teaching or graduates and career opportunities. How about NSW?

I'll comment by saying if you go to USyd, UNSW, UTS or Macquarie (in NSW), you'll end up with a respected Commerce/Business degree. Choosing where to go should depend on where YOU want to go, friends, convenience etc.

There is no one way to tell which uni is more prestigious, and quite frankly no employer would care. If the employer cared about which uni is better though, then unfortunately The University of Sydney is ranked above UNSW at this moment, and the rankings are probably the only way to tell which university is "better" in any quantitative form.

As was said above, consider which is easier for you, and out of the four big ones, pick one from those three. If you can't get into them, consider UWS I guess. I know someone doing BBus at UWS, they seem to enjoy it.

Isn't B Bus the same as Commerce anyway? That's what I'm thinking based on my friend at UTS in comparison to what I learn in Commerce.

There are many surveys/statistics around the net which say UNSW grads or USYD grads or MACQ grads or UTS grads have best job opportunities/prospects but ultimately it comes down to you the student and how you perform in job interviews; as well as your own interests/activities beyond academics. It's the same as with the HSC rankings of schools- just because a school went great last year doesn't mean that the next grade will go equally well.

I may be over generalising but.......I think B.Commerce is a more rigrid, academic and in-depth course than B.Business.
I was considering doing B.Business at UTS but I looked through the units outline and they seemed abit, well, general and broad.

UTS description of their B.Business:

The Bachelor of Business offers students a sound background in all areas of business through common core subjects, in addition to in-depth knowledge in one or more chosen areas of interest.
This course provides a basic understanding of important aspects of business and a wide choice of majors/sub-majors. Students are encouraged to add a specialisation to their broad general training.
Whereas B.Commerce at USYD is described as:

This three year (full-time) program provides students with the opportunity to study in areas that are of particular relevance to the management and conduct of business, such as accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management decision sciences, international business and industrial relations and human resource management. Depending on the units of study chosen, this award course may also be recognised by CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Australian Computer Society.
B.Business at UTS has been labelled as "practical" and I can sort of see why, it offers what appear to be very relevant areas of study to gain "a basic understanding of important aspects of business,";

Typical part-time program for core subjectsYear 1Autumn semester25115 Economics for Business 6cp21129 Managing People and Organisations 6cpSpring semester22107 Accounting for Business 6cp79203 Business Law and Ethics 6cpYear 2Autumn semester24108 Marketing Foundations 6cp26134 Business Statistics 6cpSpring semester25300 Fundamentals of Business Finance 6cpSelect 6 credit points from the following options: 6cp22207 Accounting Transactions and Business Decisions6cp 21193 Business Strategy6cp
Whereas USYD's Commerce has the following (annoying) compulsory core units;
Yes, all eleven are compulsory :(. I can't really comment on B.Commerce at Mac or UNSW. I have heard that Mac is much more flexible than USYD and UNSW though.

At UNSW/USYD B. Business would just be included in B. Commerce with all the subjects you can choose from to suit your business finance or whatever major?

I'm not sure what you're trying to ask there. UNSW/USYD do not run B.Business at all, only B.Commerce or Econ. Commerce and Business course do share some similar units of study. In reply to the topic of the thread, I think B.Commerce is more highly regarded than B.Business, on the whole.

I know, you wouldn't get B. Business on your actual degree but you could simply do the same courses of business under b. commerce (business major of some sort); what i'm saying is choose commerce over b. business.

No accounting?
yeah the danger is people do all sorts of weird subjects, and you end up with grads with commerce degrees which are more useless than arts degrees. lol they actually advertised on their publications that "our degree is ultra flexible" as if it was a good thing.

I think you really do need core competencies in a degree, and you have to force that onto some people. though personally, I did not find Accounting 1A was useful to me in terms of helping me understand Accounting. For me, I had to do at least Intermediate Financial Accounting before I could understand what all the bs was about, just like intermediate economics is needed b4 u understand eco properly.

4 is nothing! Are there more now?
From 2005, we have to do an additional subject Organisational Behaviour. Oh. My. God. What a waste of a subject.

LOL. I've been thinking about this lately; being a commerce AND arts student myself. I think I'll end up with two pretty useless degrees, especially the majors I'm thinking of doing.

oh sorry no offence lol. I shouldn't have said that, I meant useless more towards a Commerce career. I hear a lot of management consultants have arts degrees, and lawyers too.

Also must take into account that B Business is still recognized as an acceptable pre-req to post-graduate studies like CA and CPA; which make things alot easier later on. After all, once you have post-grad qualifications in the industry, noone really cares about your degree. IIRC the UTS B Business has all the CA reqs in the normal degree structure (majoring in Accounting and something else) whereas at UNSW it requires a lot more thinking/planning to ensure that you get your degree structured correctly to incorporate everything you need for CA as well as your majors.
