what are the jobs/careers in deman. who cares what is popular [it matters], but what will secure you a job in hte future, where demands are needeed. overseas as well if need be.
accounting, marketing, econmomics. if you can, identify any specificalities like in accounting some say that auditors are iin demand etc.

It'd have to be accounting (unless someone provides evidence to the contrary, since I don't have any hard facts). I think it's common knowledge though that there's always jobs for accounting graduates, because accounting is such a diverse discipline.

I do think auditing would have the most available jobs, but I'm just going on what I see from Big4 websites, specifically their graduate and internship programs, where they provide a list of all their vacancies in each division. An example I pulled from the KPMG website for graduate vacancies in Accounting in the Sydney office:

Audit: 57
Business Performance Services: 0
Corporate Finance: 1
Forensic: 2
Government Advisory Services: 2
Human Resources: 1
Information Risk Management: 6
Marketing: 0
Middle Market Advisory: 18
Migration: 1
Tax: 30

Good question!

From my understanding, a lot of companies use vacation programs as a way to source graduates. Grad programs are still advertised but there is a stronger chance that if you're accepted into a vacation program you may be offered employment once you graduate. Of course, that's provided that they're happy with the work you've done.

Also, there are other alternatives to grad programs. Some companies may not have a formal one in place and may advertise for graduates in a certain area. Also, if you gain employment related to what you're studying while you are undertaking your degree, you may not need to go through the grad programs if you just move up the ranks.

yep definitely acounting
however you usually dont have to do a different major for most grad positions in accounting firms, as long as u have the units required to go on with the CA. obviously there are some areas where you will need more specialised degrees but it is basic accountant professions, i.e. taxation and auditing that are in demand mostly. i work in the audit team at the newcastle office of PwC and theyre always looking for people for the tax dep't, not so much the audit dep't at the moment, however there is major shortage of senior accountants and managers everywhere

because there was this massive article in teh smh last saturday saying that although there is strong demand for accountants, its only in the lower ranks, to move up there is sitll fieerce competition?! i dno if that qualifies as seniour accountants or if they were talking more CFO style... but yeh... thats good to hear...

ECON is definately relevant imo.

I think ill pick up finance next year. Sounds like heaps of fun. And my lethal tri-major of accounting/finance/political economy will be complete. *insert evil laugh*

Don't be fooled by that - KPMG is largely a financial advisory and audit firm. You're better off applying for jobs to true Marketing firms, or firms where marketers are actively recruited

It depends what kind of marketing firms or companies you apply to. I have friends who do marketing and from what they tell me FMCG companies e.g Unilever, P&G etc are hard to get into.

Not sure what it's like for other types of marketing firms though

nah grad positions are still at the very very bottom, only slightly above trainee intake

senior accountant is one with about 5/6 years experience i think....and they dont necessarily have to have done their CA i dont think...i mean by the time i finish my degree ill have been working 4 years its definitely the best way to do it if you can handle the workload.....and they often hire people partway thru their degrees too

they like starting people off early and following them all the way theu...thats how they make the most money, however there are a few problems with staff turnover rate...which is funny cos its often the higher level females who are leaving becuase of lack of flexibility around maternity leave and stuff like that...lol pwc is supposedlky going thru a crisis cos only 13% of the partnership are female

geez itd kick arse to be a partner....id rather earn that muich money than have a kid any day! its a hard slog to get there tho...

my problem is that i am in my 2nd yr at uni doing amangement degree and dont have enough units to finish a major in accounting so i cant satisfy CA/CPA and i dont know what to do. plus i want to get some form of traineeship so i can get experience etc. in accounting.

You could always make up the units at Sydney Uni, they offer specific accounting/law subjects to get you accredited (you have to pay though).
