I'm interested in this degree but was wondering which university is better suited to my interests.

I know UTS is the leading uni for communications, but the problem is that it forces you to focus and specialise in a major when applying for UAC undergraduate courses (I'm in year 12); for example Bachelor of Communication (journalism) or Bachelor of Public Communication when I personally have no idea whether I want to specialise or have training in different aspects.
I like UTS because it gives heaps of practical experience which would make you job ready, but the problem is that the degree doesn't offer the flexibility of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media and Communication at University of Sydney. Because I wanted to study a few languages and international relations, history, politics within my degree to allow for a wider scope because my main interest is writing but I was also thinking of working in policy, government jobs, diplomacy...I really don't know but these are areas that interest me.

I also like the student life, campus and rigorous focus on Arts at Sydney, but there is also a lot of theoretical aspects to the course and I'm unsure in terms of job prospects whether Sydney uni trains and assists in giving students work experience and exchange programs for media and communications.
Any advice from students who study the degree at either university would be most helpful.

Also, journalism is extremely competitive with only a number of jobs to come by so I was wondering where a media and communications degree can bring you, like what careers. Thanks!

I am currently in the exact same boat as you! But Im deciding between UTS and Sydney have done law/international studies for a semester at sydney and hating it and wanting to transfer to media comms/law at either UTS or maybe I will stay at Sydney.

I feel like although UTS does make you specify, this is actually quite smart. It gives you focus. I also think that changing into another media/comms stream wouldn't be too impossible at UTS if you end up hating journalism or whatever..

I found Sydney uni horrendous in terms of being a practical uni. It was not flexible in the slightest and I really struggled to see the great student life.
Isn't the media/comms degree at Sydney longer too?

I think I am going to transfer to UTS! :) Good luck with your decision

Thanks for your insights. :) they were really helpful. Yes, I think media/ comms at Sydney is about four years. So when you were saying that the sydney uni degree for media/ comms its not flexible do you mean it doesn't allow for certain electives.
I also recently went to an open day at UTS which allows you to do a double degree in two media/ comms subjects like Journalism/ Public Communication or creative writing/ social and digital media.

I just found Sydney Uni a very backward university in many ways... lack of technology, the contact with students, terrible timetabling (I was at uni 5 days a week and two days only for 1 hour in the middle of the day). I feel like the fact that UTS does allow you to pick electives from other areas of communication means you can tailor your degree.

I am almost 100% moving to UTS :).

haha, thanks for the advice. I know what u mean by timetabling cos my brother studies there but he does a science degree and he had a lecture right in the middle of the day or one mid morning and then the next one late afternoon! :) Good luck with journalism and hope you enjoy your degree at UTS
