Maths Ext 2 Should I try it out? (1 Viewer)

How hard is ext 2 compared to say chem or economics, thinking about my subjects I want to do for next year since it is approaching year 12 very very fast, I haven't really tried this year, I should have and I plan to study in the next few weeks to cover everything I have done so Im all good to start fresh for year 12. I know I can go really well in my HSC, its the amount of effort I do, I want to continue ext 1 for Uni opportunities and such, but I want to know if Its worth giving ext 2 a shot to see how it is. How hard is it in terms of workload, any tips for it to cope with the work? How much study compared to eco and chem would you have to put in, and if you could put a percentage of study on ext 2 out of all your subjects how much would it occupy, I heard 80% once but meh, anyway info people info! How good are you at maths? Do you like maths? You might as well give it a shot- you can always drop it if you hate it.

And this 80% figure is BS- I spend less time on MX2 than my other subjects but that works for me- obviously its an individual figure. But yeah, defs give it a go, its a fascinating course

I havent done it so I cant comment on the difficulty - but I think its definitely worth so you can see for yourself what its like. If you regret picking it, you can just drop it, but if you regret NOT picking it, there wont be much you can do.

I'm pretty good, I barely study (year 11) so I could be so so so much better, I understand pretty much everything thrown at me, I am only concerned about the fact that the HSC for it seems ridiculously hard for it, I mean people get like 60% and it scales to 90%, if you have spent the whole year on that subject studying your guts out and to get a result like that then the difficulty of that subject must be insane...

Don't be frightened.

It's not as hard as everyone makes it out to be (especially won't be for someone who can get by in year 11 with minimal study).

Take it as you only get one chance to do so (excluding TAFE or repeating).

What i find difficult is the amount of rote learning involved in various subjects lol. So MX2 is easier than chemistry and physics for me as it requires less memorising hence less effort.

People who say it is insanely difficult are the ones who don't put in enough effort. No, you don't have to study for hours and hours every night but a consistent effort is required - it does get difficult at times. Like deswa1 said, it depends on the individual on how much work is needed, 80% is overload though; I spent ~ 4/5 hours on it a week throughout the year and have amped it up a little now. But basically if you do the exercises from your textbook and then move onto past papers for each topic you should be set. If you like maths and have a natural ability at it I definitely recommend giving it a go, you can always drop it.

This. Basically, go over a topic and know it. Then go through past HSC questions and particularly look for those questions in Q7/8. Once you can do those, THEN you totally understand the topic. Obviously though, answering most of Q8 is for people aiming for 95+, I'm not sure what you're aiming for but if you are aiming a bit lower than that- then don't beat yourself up if you can't do those questions. Make sure though you can get ALL of the easy questions right and look through the later questions because they often have really easy one or two markers in them.

Consistent studies and lots of past papers should get the job done.. hopefully..

Definitely give it a go first, if you find it too hard or don't like it you can always drop it. The amount of study varies from person to person, I guess. Some people say they don't need to put in that much effort, compared to other subjects, but for me, its one of the subjects where I have to practise A LOT. Like, I wish someone had told me at the beginning that it would be a lot more work compared to Ext 1. I never needed to study much for MAd and MX1 (and I got 90+) but after nearly failing all my topic tests/half yearlies for MX2, I realised that its a lot more work!
That saying, definitely give it a try. It helps to be consistent- keep up with the chapter exercises (really really important!), practise past questions and know the concepts inside out. Its not just good enough to memorise the formulas, you need to become familiar with the types of questions they ask- but I guess thats the same for every subject.

+1. Basically what I was going to say. There are rewards for doing it and putting the effort in i.e the massive scaling. Which will help you get that 95+ you want.
