Hi Everyone, Im actually doing 2U Maths this year and my schools doing this thing where we do 3 subjects in 1 year sit the exam, then do 3 subjects the following year and sit your exam for them. I am trying so hard in maths and not getting the results I want, i am putting in so many hours but my results are not very good only managing to get 50's and 60's. My dad is an engineer and is actually training me in maths but why am I not getting my results?

Are there particular topics where you are constantly tripping up in exams?

No I know how to do most stuff, but before exams I get too stressed out and I dont know how to minimise that. Im not very good and sequences and series and exponentials.

Where are you losing your marks? Silly mistakes or genuinely not understanding the content. If the latter understanding is KEY as opposed to robotically applying formulas (though tbh, less so for 2u).

When you're reading the question, think: "What is this askign of me?" and "What skills should i apply?". In addition, try and understand concepts through the questions themselves.

Though tbh this advice is just stabbing in the dark as you haven't said what's wrong :)

lol, then just relax. If you know your stuff, there's no reason to be stressed. (i sometimes talk to myself and say "you got this shit")

Yeah I understand the content but in exams i sometimes blank out and also yes it is mainly silly mistakes and they build up and really lower my mark. I would look at a question and know what to do but find it hard to apply sometimes.

Hmm... I dunno this may sound weird but maybe it's because your Dad is the one tutoring you and that's why you get so stressed before exams because if you don't go well, you feel you have let your Dad down? It may be a VERY stupid thing I have said or maybe it could be the reasoning. Also just a tip about stress, If you are really feeling that stressed out you should go and talk to your Year Advisor or one of your most trusted teachers about it because THEY may be able to give some tips/advice and help you to overcome it. Do you have anything in your life that is interfering with your stress levels outside of school?

Maybe just do as many applications questions and link the formulas with words. Though i don't know how you can 'know what to do' but not apply formulas :/

Also, you said you 'put in lots of hours'. How do study maths?

To be honest my dad is actually proud of whatever I get, he knows how hard I try so his like whatever u get thats fine. But yes i think its the reasoning and i dont have anything else interfering with my stress levels but I put too much pressure on my self to achieve high marks and I think thats where the problem is :(

Sometimes if you cannot control yourself, you should weigh out things. This is just my opinion, but what would you prefer to get Q 1 - 16 with many errors between. Or Q 1 - 15 with solid answers and barely any mistakes. Sometimes you might need to sacrifice a question and focus on reducing mistakes by taking your time. In the end, it's your decision.

Similar thing happens to me for english. I think its exam panic/stress. In the day before and MORNING OF an exam, just remain calm, avoid panic talk with others, tell yourself you'll go in, try your hardest, and be happy with whatever happens.

get a tutor WHO IS NOT A FAMILY MEMBER because that expectation makes it harder for you to focus and by having someone not related to you its more formal and serious work. came first in 2 unit maths and physics in yr 11, couldnt have gotten there without my tutor. i went from a last in physics to first. tutors help heaps and all the money is worth it in the end. trust me. :spin:

Oh god, my dad is an engineer and tried this too. You should get an actual HSC tutor. Or, try doing a HSC gen maths paper, if you can get 90+% then just drop.
