I am not quite sure exactly what you mean by general knowledge books, but there is a really nice series of books written by IM Gelfand (and various other Russian mathematicians) that are intended for high school students. You can get them on amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Algebra-I-M-Gelfand/dp/0817636773/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217408103&sr=8-1

Gelfand is a mathematician with an international reputation, and I think his books on Algebra and Trigonometry, in particular, are quite interesting and entertainingly written. They are not at all like textbooks!

What area do you live ? I know of a couple of bookstores that just specialise in educational books.

I recommend just going into the newsagents which have a little book area in them. They are excellent where I am! They have a whole section dedicated to school studies and revision tests, including simple maths revision (which is necessary to do so that the harder stuff can be understood). Just go into the newsagents.
