Like I give you a situation where Alkenes have a different number of hydrogen atoms on each side of the double bond. Ok so you attach a hydrogen halogen or just a few hydrogens to the Carbon next to the the double bond with the least no. of hydrogens and it changes to an Alkane with single bonds. This is apparently called the Markovnikov's rule which comes under Addition reactions.

Does this even come in the HSC course for Production of Chemicals? I have tried to look for the Syllabus point related to it but haven't found it anywhere except for some questions in the Conquering Chem textbook.

I did a search on BOS and only found one place where this rule was mentioned which was on a Uni Chem thread ...

Edit: Forget it. Its not even in the HSC.

Re: Markovnikov rule?

I've never heard of that rule, as in the name

I don't think it's part of HSC

Is there anything related to it that comes in the course if they haven't explicity called it by that exact name?

Re: Markovnikov rule?

I just did questions related to these but tried to find the syllabus point for it but couldnt find it.

Does that mean the questions in the textbook are not necessarily related to the Syllabus?

Btw heres an example of the rule. Isn't there anything like this?

Dont leave me hanging. Am I confusing it for something else?

This is from the Yr 12 Conquering Chem book.

Sounds like I have some heck of a dodgy textbook.

The markovnikov rule still applies here. In fact, each of the Br atoms are anti added to the carbons (opposite sides) whereas the diagram u posted are on the same side. For HSC purposes, you won't be marked wrong by drawing the one in the diagram you posted. And yeah, this is first year organic chem

Finally this is the response I was looking for.

Can I ask why dont they put any emphasis in the syllabus on this specific rule in order to further understand these addition reactions?

That would be 'too hard'.

Seriously I spent some time understanding this and didn't think at all it was that hard.

Only till I realised this is not even in the syllabus but in Uni Chem.

A lot of HSC courses got dumbed down around 2001 when the Board of Studies changed the syllabuses.
