In terms of marking the mathematics exam, do the markers usually try to find marks for you (positive marking) e.g. you get the answer wrong but show some progress in your working out.

Yes. But there is a marking criteria, so it's fairly objective.

They aren't out to take marks off you, they will try and give as much as they can.

Your working out has to be right though..

e.g. The superannuation question. 1 mark for setting up the geometric series, 1 mark for solving. If you can only set it up correctly you will still get a mark without solving (hence 1 mark loss)..

they're out to give as much marks as possible. HSc markers are way less stricter than your average school teacher marking.

So for example, If I did that Simpsons rule question and got 100% right up until the end, and made a silly calc error, would you get 2/2 or 3/3 marks?

You will lose 1 mark, because the marking criteria will say 1 mark for correct solution.

Really it depends on the marker, if you write down an exact answer, and then make a calc error rounding off, I reckon they would give you full marks.
