Explain why it is essential to monitor the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel. (3 marks)
To achieve an optimum yield of ammonia it is essential to ensure that the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel are monitored. To increase the yield of ammonia chemists are able to decrease the temperature where the reaction is occurring, however in doing this it also slows down the rate of reaction. A suitable balance must there be maintained between the highest yield and efficiency.
By increasing the pressure of the system a higher yield of ammonia can be achieved but this will also lower the reaction rate. Higher pressures also make it difficult to maintain equipment at industry standard levels.
It is therefore essential to monitor the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel in order to maintain safety levels and to achieve the highest yield of ammonia possible.
