+Athletes need goals so that they have an aim in competing, something to aspire towards and persevere with training over extended periods

+they provide focus, give direction, and help people to realise their aspirations

+goals must be realistic, specific and measurable

+There are 4 types---
Short term- taking a second off 5m swimming in 3 months
Long term- winning state swimming title next year
Behavioural- Making it to every training session during the season
Performance- relates to the levels of success in sport

goal setting manages anxiety because it allows them to focus on relevant cues, not that "oh no, this is an important match" they will be able to say to themselves, this is just another step closer to achieivng what i want to achieve, professional player or wateva.yet as without wings said, goal setting must be realistic. lots of smaller goals are better then having 1 big one, yet they should be set to go towards that final objective
