I'm going to buy a laptop for uni next year (probably second-hand) and I can't decide between Mac and PC. My Dad says Mac because the very new notebooks by them are apparently Windows and PC compatible. I’ve been a PC user all my life, but I don’t mind the idea of using a Mac at all.
Any thoughts? Which would be more cost effective, useful and efficient as a notebook computer?

first of all what would you use the computer for? work, games, watching movies?
If you're a PC user all your life, then i would get a Asus or dell for example as theyre good value for money.
But since you said that you dont mind using the mac at all then the choice is up to you. Personally, id just stick to the PC but thats just me.

MAC is a whole new OS to learn from PC but if you dont mind learning the OS all over again mac are good for video editing. but it all depends on what you are using it for but most uni's have both MAC and PC support

I have a MacbookPro and it has completely revolutionised my life. All my friends use Mac's as well because OSX is such a fabulous operating system. It isn't hard to use, as the interface is intuitive, simple and beautiful :) Coming from the clumsiness of Windows, it won't take long at all for you to adjust to a Mac.

get the pc for the compatibility. if u used pcs all your life, learning to use a mac can (and most likely will) be a pain in the back...

Like I said, by the time I actually get around to buying one, the new Intel compatible Mac notebooks should be on the second-hand market.
So I guess I'll get a middle-range one and install windows on it- is that hard to do? Also, worth getting Vista or should I stick to XP?
(I don't need to be able to play games on it, since I only play WoW at home anyway)

Get a Mac if you've got a complex about hating windows.
Get a PC if you have a complex about macs.
Get a pad and paper if you can't afford either.

Seriously, why the fuck do people think that laptops are essential for uni? I hate you fuckers who pull it out and take 5 minutes to pack it up as I'm trying to get out of the lecture hall. If you're not looking up porn or playing a game of Quake 3 in lecture, then don't bother.

If u r going to run parallels or boot camp, run XP, as vista screws up. coming from a converted PC user, macs r a breeze to work out. one afternoon should be plenty to work out the ropes of OS X. and for school, i recommend iWorks, as it is far, far superior to office. and the new one has a spreadsheet program as well. pure bliss to use. and they look much better than PCs as well.

And like u said, intel macs have been upgraded slightly, so for 1500 u can get a machine with 80 gb harddrive, 2 ghz processor, 1 gig ram and core 2 duo. not much more is needed for uni work.

Kinda off topic somewhat, but do you really need a laptop if you do software engineering? (For lectures at least) It's at the top of my list for preferences for next year at uni, so i was just wondering. I'll have my PC of course (obviously can't be taking into lectures), but do u think i should get a laptop as well?

And as a windows user, i would recomend using windows. But that's just personal opinion. My and my brother have this same argument all the time lol.

Need or want?

Surely you have access to labs and everything could be done WITHOUT having the additional need for a laptop, or is that covered as part of the cost to your Uni expenses?

EDIT2: Also the Labs at Uni are state of the art but they don't have the modified compilers and other things I use as well as some other code management apps and the like that allow me to code what I want when I want how I want. Thus... good
if you want to modify your computer may i suggest that u should get a PC. i love my mac and i think the whole PC/Mac war is ridiculous but PCs are probably easier to modify...

Again we hear the clamour "But what about Games". This may be a deal killer for you, most people that play games (On their computers) really aren't that computer literate and wouldn't use a computer for the same things I'd be using it for (Coding, compiling, correspondence, website design, photoshop, etc.) Hell if you want games get a Wii or a 360, those things work absolutely fantastic and are dedicated to games, no spending thousands of dollars on hardware to run half life 18 counter-counter-counter-counter-strike "This time you aren't with the terrorists undercover as previously but actually on our side but you're undercover for the terrorists whom which you were previously undercover for us but now you are not and that is the game"

Again matter of taste and opinion.
games..........games r much better on PC, than on 360 or Wii or PS3 why? because u can upgrade ur computer every month (if you hav the money) and get these games running perfectly and looking fantastic. I know wat u mean by they r good if you don't want to spend the money, but for the most part is that nothing can beat PC - games wise anyway. Because new and better games r always coming out, while an 360 for example can only update every few years. And anything that is good on a console, usually will come out on PC example - GTA, Halo, etc. But for the other way around, it doesnt work......look at counter strike for example, it came out on PC first, then xbox decided to put it on xbox, that was a complete disaster. But i do see where u coming from, and i am not trying to cause an argument :)
I hav to admit, consoles are great (i hav an xbox myself) but nothing can beat a PC.;)

And alot people these days are becoming computer literate as our generation are growing up with computers, and so people like me do use the computer for not only games but photoshop etc
But this is my opinion anyway
:)

Well apart from having always used laptops it means I can run all my VM's on the go, it's way more useful, I can code at Uni with group members and show and demonstrate code and other presentations fairly easily.

ALSO Wow I got you confused with Komatikom. Fuck I feel really bad about that. Wow that is not a fate I'd wish on anyone.

The portability and ease of use makes the Laptop most useful, and hell, for most people it's 'their' first computer (As in not a communal one), don't forget that.

Also the Laptop allows me to Code/Design/Photoshop on the train which would otherwise be dead time. It allows you to make the most of your time and have everything you need with you at a moment's notice.

EDIT2: Also the Labs at Uni are state of the art but they don't have the modified compilers and other things I use as well as some other code management apps and the like that allow me to code what I want when I want how I want. Thus... good.

EDIT: Also dude, it doesn't matter about the cost, it's not exactly like I'm struggling for cash or anything... getting a new laptop or computer isn't that much of an expense.
I've always tried to justify buying myself a laptop for the exact same reasons, but I can't seem to bring myself to do it knowing my PC at home will do it fine.

To each his own I guess.

And rofl @ Komaticom.
