i know economics is not a science...it can be studied though...and I doubt science will be as developed as it is today without the "bullshit" that you refer to as the economy...

If you were inclined to tax the rich more, why not just increase income tax. Rather than singling out this one particular good for no apparent reason?
Isn't that just as arbitrary as the 'luxury car tax'?

I don't see what's so bad about a consumption based tax? I think it's the only fair taxation. If anything, slash the income tax especially for low income earners, raise the gst, and arbitrarily raise taxes on all expensive goods e.g. large tv tax, expensive suit tax...

That might impact harshly on peoples jobs and the "economy" in general though? :(

Generally when applying extra tax to a particular good, it should be demonstrated that this good produces negative externalities. Luxury cars don't do this any more than other cars, so there is no justification for the extra tax.
Yeah, I agree that there are more productive sources of taxatiion they should have sought first.

If it's uniform it's fine... increasing the GST and perhaps widening the list of goods that aren't affected by it is another fine way to increase revenue imo.

So little faith in the political discretion of the common citizen, Captain Gh3y.
