With reference to the structure of a loudspeaker, explain why the current applied must be AC and not DC.

The speaker cone has to move in an oscillating fashion forward and backward to produce sound waves.

If only a DC current was applied, the speaker cone will only be able to move in one direction. However, if AC is used, the switching of the direction of current can be utitlised to move the speaker cone forward or backward depending on the AC input.
