Personally, I opt for metal/ thrash while doing assignments... Don't have all that many assignments, so I ain't listening very often. I feel I write better (with English in particular) when I'm listening to a James Hetfield or a Serj Tankian in the background.

Is anyone else like that? If so which genre do you listen to?

most people [read: parents and teachers] say classical music's good.
I usually listen to muse, panic at the disco and fall out boy on repeat though =\

HEY! I'm a parent and I used to listen to TV and Movie themes (some were rock some were classical). Being a visual person I think it helped by linking the theme with the subject so I could remember stuff better if I thought of that TV show or movie.

Learnt the 1st 20 elements of the periodic table watching a TV soap opera. :D

I'm like this every once in a while. I'll sit down and watch Man Vs Wild whilst revising over work, and each time Grylls does something ridiculously awesome (e.g. kill and eat an alligator), I'll manage to remember what I'm revising because of that picture in my head.

Note: Ignore my enthusiasm for the show.

I study better when everything is silent.

Doesn't your mind wander off when you listen to music. I end up singing the songs in my head :(

Hence the reason why themes (and probably classical) are good - no words!

Classical > anything else when studying.

Anything else > classical when doing assignments.
