I have never been to a lecture where they take the roll. Suss out the situation in the first week. They will make it clear if you HAVE to go to lectures.
Not every lecture will be online, some are though.
Personally i dont like to miss lectures as i hate that feeling in a exam where i am kicking myself for not attending classes. It depends on your course but sometimes you do learn handy facts from lectures that you may miss in your readings.
