i think many young people can see the liberals taking away certain things that our younger generation would feel we deserve [/B][/QUOTE]

Good point, something like raising the bloody HECS fees will certainly mean that people our age (specially those who want to get to uni, but don't have enough money) hating Howard.

As out legal studies teacher once said: Traditionally Labor supports the working class, and Liberal the rich class (left wing and right wing). These days however they are both right in the middle, neither left or right wing, each putting out similiar policies, neaither really taking a chance.

Until they put someone up there worth voting for, vote for some independant party. As someone before said, pick the one with the strangest name or something. Take the power away from the two major parties and it'll cause them to have to change their policies to win the independents, if they want any Bills passed.

Howard does play a bit dirty doesn't he. As far as I know he keeps trying to pass similiar bills that are continually knocked back by the Senate. So, after his proposal was kncoedk back to reduce the Senate's power, his trying to get a double dissolution.

Though Labor have something to answer for to. At State level that is. What the fuck is this whole council algamation shit. My council might be derelict, and they might need a government force to bring them upto scratch, but the neighbouring council is bloody efficient, and it wants to remain independant. What I'm saying is, if this bastard gets to much power, then all the decisions, such as house rates and that can be raised to suit the government (who gets the money I'll bet).

Point is, the government is trying to become too controlling. Give the power back to the minority parties so that the big boys have to get all sorts of support, and play fair.

And by the way, Howard or Latham, I don't know. At least Latham appears a natural sort of bloke. Not some suit wearing politician who dodges the issue. Though he seems a bit of a loud mouth, and a hot head for my liking.
Politicians :chainsaw:

You've GOT TO BE KIDDING!!

Latham? WTF? Okay then you crazy Chumps, we'll see how our economy is when we've lost the most powerful ally in the world due to his outlandish comments and unruly behaviour. Good work there.

Mark Latham would destroy Australia, in all seriousness, i can't think of anyone worse than Latham to lead oz.
Latham wouldn't do anything about the refugees, the Labor party opposes everything that the Liberals say in the house, but if they lead, whaddya know, "lets leave the system as it is".
Oh and don't get me started on Goth Whitlam. Goth is a bloody national disgrace, what other country has EVER had to cease supply due to the amount of corruption and underhanded dealings within the government? None. Goth was the worst PM ever.

Howard all the way thankyou. At least hes a gentleman, Id rather have a gentleman than a fucking retarded ape-man who considers beating someone standard practice.

Same goes for the SMH I'm afraid.

It is interesting to note that while there is nearly a balance in the votes - even on this thread, that only 1, maybe 2 people have actually supported Howard publicly - even if there really isn't that much of a majority.

To me it is disconcerting that the Liberal voters seem apathetic toward Howard and his policies - are you just voting what your parents voted?

In anycase, for me, niether. I will not be voting above the line for Labor nor Liberal.

i don't necessarily believe newspapers, but when i see video footage of someone saying something, it does tend to re-inforce what's been written. of course, you can never truly trust the media, but not believing everything you read is different to taking everything with a grain of salt...

sigh.... here goes the biggest waste of time since arguing with idiots gets you nowhere, but then again one cant sit back and listen to that dribble...

the US make up roughly 1/5th of australias trade... stop getting the impression that leaving america will ruin us...

even if there is a TOTAL block on trade, which everyone agrees is ridiculous to say the least... we would only be affected by as much as the recent drought affected us... sure thats a lot but thats for a TOTAL block... which no one would ever do... even bush...

secondly... america holds massive trade barriers against Australia's major exports... steel and agriculture... every time the try to reduce them ordinary American farmers drive tractors on to capitol hill and throw shit at the senate... and in a time of economic recession no president in the history of the US would think of reducing these barriers by anywhere near a large enough amount...

thirdly labor are considerably weak on refugee policy... they are quite divided... however, i reckon latham will settle that... NOBODY suports open borders NOBODY.,.. NOWHERE is it done and NOWHERE will it be done...

the only issue here is that the current system is both economically and, much more importantly, ethically WRONG... people spend years in detention in ridiculous locations... where there are many people who would volunteer to take on refugees in their homes...

Australia is in population crisis... migration is needed to pick up the slack of australian households... not for MELBOURNE or SYDNEY... but for everywhere else in Australia...

GOUGH WHITLAM... began socialism in Australia... began public funding for a number of vital things such as medicare... free university (that has been rolled back through HECS) free health care, increase in funding for public schooling, and importantly drew out of VIETNAM... and should i mention the white australia policy?

sigh yeh that sounds like a shit guy............. if the Australian public had given him the chance those changes would have gone further to better the Australian people...

It was not corruption on the part of labor or whitlam, but on the side of the conservative Liberal party of the time... the mischevious backstabbing GG and Fraser... (who i still respect as a good PM following Whitlam...)

i can think of MANY people worse than Latham... Bush or Howard...

p.s. "fucking retarded ape-man who considers beating someone standard practice" wtf?

Ape man? - If someone tried to steal my stuff I'd probably break his arm to.

The economy is strong, but i could be stronger. We are importing stuff we don't need. Meat and some crops we already produce in great quantities. We need to supply oursleves first ebfore we worry about the rest of the world. And no free trade agreement. It costs more on ship costs than train or truck, hence it's cheaper to use homemade stuff where possible.
We have oil (I think), we have coal, we have uranium, we make steel, and I think (If the CSIRO is right) we have a lot more gold to be found.
Our economy would go way up if the government realised that the countries who buy from us need our products alot more than their money.
Our major trading partners should be those who can offer us something we don't have, in return, or those who don't have what we offer.
Japan is on the forefront of technology, but they have a large mob on a little island. Food for technology, hence barter which is trade at is simplest.
Or china, or middle eatsern countries who can't produce enough food and need us.
We need, nor want, the US meat, they can keep it and their free trade agreemenet.

A free trade agreement with the yanks would be in their favour, it would ruin our econonmy. Destroy our farming industry and send the profits overseas.

Besides, we are an isolated isalnd with a small population. Should World War III ever erup (which may be the holy war), we will need to produce our own stuff and support ourselves. Being dependant on other countries leaves us fucked.

Housing is a problem. Get out of the city, move to the country. Life's better and housing is cheaper.
Immigration is a problem. We should send them to the country, make them become part of the mainstream society and not end up in their little ethnic groups, where they don't become Australian and not part of the larger community.

Illegal immigrants may be dangerous. What an easier way to sneak into the country if you're a terrorist.

Free uni would mean that the really intelligent people would ned up in uni not the really rich. Raising HECS fees creates a poverty trap.

You need to look at politics from both sides. Still I say vote neither Liberal nor Labour. Vote some independant, so that the major parties need their interest for Bills to be passed.

He isn't racist. I think that Asquithian has used the right label, a 'cultural supremacist'.

Costello is an equal of Howard with his views regarding multiculturalism at the expense of 'mainstream' Australia.

Besides, does the commodification of a few ethnic ideas into the public realm really constitute multiculturalism? Multiculturalism has to progress beyond this, although how true multiculturalism can be achieved is beyond me.
