Hello.

Which university, in your opinion and experiences, is the best for studying langauges?

I'm thinking about majoring in French, Arabic and Farsi or Spanish but this can change due to relativity in life and all. I'm definitely going to major in Arabic, though, if I make it into university.

Thank you!

USYD. Because unlike UNSW, it actually taught the languages I wanted.

This has been answered many times, so do a search. Basically, it always boils down to what languages you want to do.

With languages like French and German, you can pretty much do them anywhere so you're looking at the style and quality of teaching, as well as the opportunities presented to students. With languages like Farsi, you're essentially limited to ANU (I think). That being said, ANU is a fantastic uni and if I wanted to do any languages that weren't specialised in another uni (eg MQ has the Slavic languages), I'd go there.

I would imagine language teaching wouldn't differ greatly between unis, so if they have the language you're wanting to do, I'd say exchange agreements, other subjects you want to do, and your personal feeling towards the uni should factor into your decision

Thanks for the replies and sorry about not searching for a similar thread focused on the same topic- I'm too lazy and busy at the moment to do one.

University of Sydney, I was actually thinking about going to USyd but the problem is that in the 'Good University Guide' the USyd, was surveyed to be in the worst percentile for categories such as 'teaching generic skills', 'teaching quality', 'value' etc. with 'sucess compared' being the only category in the average percentile. The rest was all down in the worst percentile, if IIRC.

So, in your experiences, is this true? I also couldn't find anything about ANU in the 'Good University Guide' but I think UWS was ranked pretty good. Do you think so too, for those that study language/s there?

Thank you.

For example - My 2nd year teacher taght at MQ and USYD so the style would be exactly the same...on another note if you are looking at exchange MQ is one of the better options, not only because of the choice but also because of the grants they give...
